Sheffield United turned the game around to defeat Wrexham 4-2 on Tuesday, bringing an abrupt end to the League One team's Carabao Cup run.
The home team clearly outplayed their opponents at Bramall Lane, but surprisingly fell behind in the 29th minute when William Boyle scored from a short distance after a corner kick.
But the newcomers' dreams were shattered when Auston Trusty scored a header to tie the game before halftime. Lewis Brunt then accidentally scored an own goal putting Sheffield United in the lead in the second half.
A foul committed on Anis Ben Slimane resulted in Brewster earning a penalty kick. However, the Wrexham keeper Callum Burton managed to save the penalty shot. Louie Marsh was quick to score the rebound, effectively securing the victory for United.
Ben Slimane scored Sheffield's fourth goal, his first since he joined the club in 2023. Sebastian Revan managed to score a consolation goal for Wrexham right before the end of the game.
Wrexham has had an impressive past few seasons, as they were promoted two years in a row. They moved up to League Two after the 2022-23 season and then advanced to League One the following year.
The team had a successful start in their first League One match in two decades by defeating Wycombe Wanderers 3-2. This marked their return to English football's third division.
The two teams have a shared history, having had a close match in the FA Cup fourth round replay in 2023. Sheffield United came out on top with two goals in extra time. Prior to this latest match on Tuesday, it had been 41 years since the Welsh team last defeated United.
