Sergio Pérez and Red Bull have decided to go their separate ways, marking the conclusion of the Mexican racer's time with the Formula 1 team.
Liam Lawson, the RB driver, is likely to be named as Pérez's successor in the next few days.
Pérez, whose lackluster performance had impacted Red Bull's chances in the constructors' championship this year, had been discussing the future of his contract since the beginning of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend.
Even though a position as an ambassador was offered to him, Pérez has chosen to completely leave his contract with Red Bull.
"I feel deeply thankful for the last four years with Oracle Red Bull Racing and for the chance to compete alongside such an incredible team," Pérez expressed.
Racing for Red Bull has been an amazing journey that I'll always hold dear. We set records, hit impressive goals, and I’ve been fortunate to connect with so many fantastic individuals throughout this time.
"It has truly been a privilege to compete alongside Max [Verstappen] as a teammate over the years and to experience our achievements together."
In June of this year, Pérez had agreed to a two-year contract extension, but his decline in performance led Red Bull to explore alternative possibilities.
This will enable him to explore racing options in other places in 2025, even though all the spots in Formula 1 have already been filled.
It's uncertain what he will do next.
Formula 1 has reached a preliminary agreement with General Motors to introduce a Cadillac team to the lineup starting in 2026.
Considering Pérez's immense popularity in North America, he is likely to be a top contender for any opportunities that arise in that region.
"I want to express my gratitude to Checo [Perez] for everything he has contributed to Oracle Red Bull Racing during the last four years," said team principal Christian Horner. "Since he came on board in 2021, he has shown himself to be an exceptional team member, playing a key role in securing two constructors' championships and achieving our inaugural one-two finish in the drivers' standings."
His five victories, achieved exclusively on street circuits, showcased his incredible drive to always go beyond the boundaries.
"Although Checo won't be part of the team next season, he will forever be a beloved member and a cherished part of our story. Thank you, Checo."
