Sean Wilson: Coronation Street star 'steps down from filming for personal reasons' after plans to reappear in Martin Platt role
ITV has confirmed that Sean Wilson will not be returning to play Martin Platt on Coronation Street as originally planned.
The actor, who was last seen on the show six years ago, was scheduled to make a return to the screen in October as part of the storyline involving his character's ex-wife, Gail Platt.
This news comes after it was previously announced that Helen Worth would be departing from the ITV soap opera, where she has played the character of Gail for 50 years.
Sean Wilson has decided to leave filming for personal reasons, ITV's representative announced on Friday.
A statement was released saying Wilson was scheduled to begin shooting scenes on July 24. The plot involves his character's on-screen son David (played by Jack P Shepherd) being surprised to see his father at the house and feeling skeptical about his sudden reappearance in their lives.
The Sun said that Wilson was called to a meeting at ITV's headquarters and didn't come back to the set.
Wilson was happy to be asked to help with Helen's departure story. He said returning to the character felt like putting on a familiar and cozy sweater that had been put away for a while.
He said: "I have loved playing the character of Martin from the very beginning, and now I am returning to the role, which I know will shake things up for the Platt family."
