Sean Wilson has explained why he was unexpectedly removed from Coronation Street just after it was revealed he would be returning.
In July, ITV announced that Wilson would reprise his role as Martin Platt in connection with the departure storyline of veteran actress Helen Worth, who portrays his ex-wife, Gail.
Worth, 73, announced earlier this year that she had left the soap opera she joined in 1974. Her exit reportedly came after a significant plot arc involving the Platt family.
Wilson, who was a familiar face on the soap back in 2005, was preparing to make his comeback to the show for the first time since 2018. He had actually begun filming his segments when suddenly, for reasons that were not disclosed, his return was unexpectedly halted by ITV, citing "personal reasons."
The actor has revealed that he was removed from the soap opera because of an ongoing police investigation regarding an indecent assault allegation from 1997.
Wilson has now been exonerated, and no additional measures will be pursued. Nevertheless, in a recent interview, the actor expressed that the accusation shattered his life, claiming it "wrecked" everything in just eight minutes.
He shared with The Sun, “I had no clue who filed the complaint or any details surrounding it, but I ended up losing my job. It’s been a nightmare. I've been feeling really down throughout the entire experience.”
Wilson was scheduled to come back for 10 episodes, but just two weeks into the filming of his return, he got an email from the show's executives requesting a meeting.
The actor mentioned that a portion of the email stated: "We need to talk about a past accusation of a sexual nature that has emerged in the last few days concerning your time on the show. We understand this may come as a surprise to you, just as it did for us."

Wilson mentioned that he didn't have any specific information about the accusation, apart from the fact that it was brought forward by a woman associated with the soap and that it reportedly took place in 1997. However, after a conversation with a detective constable in October, Wilson asserts that he received different information about the nature of the allegation than what ITV had previously informed him.
He also stated that the police informed him they had never reached out to ITV regarding the accusation, which he said has ruined his career.
All of Wilson's scenes, set to be broadcast starting in October, have been canceled.
The Independent has reached out to ITV for a response.
When Wilson mysteriously left, a source informed MailOnline, “What’s really strange is that they had already begun filming most of the scenes, with many cast members and crew present on set, and everyone thought they were going to film more with Sean before he departed again.”
The report mentioned that ITV's choice to withhold information from Wilson's co-workers about what was going on "really set off a flurry of speculation on set," describing it as a "very uncommon" decision.
