James McGarry, a New Zealand player who was a substitute for Aberdeen, appeared to be very unhappy after the team lost to Rangers at Hampden Park in the Scottish League Cup final.

James McGarry, who plays for the New Zealand national team, was unable to win his second significant football tournament in 2023 during the game at Hampden Park in Scotland on Sunday (which was early Monday morning in New Zealand).

At the Viaplay League Cup final game between Aberdeen and Rangers, with nearly 50,000 fans in attendance, the 25-year-old entered the match from the bench during the 66th minute.

After the game was in progress for a period of ten minutes, the Rangers team captain, James Tavernier, successfully scored the solitary goal of the game.

McGarry and one more Aberdeen defender failed to prevent Tavernier from scoring the winning goal, as the fullback smashed it into the net.

McGarry, whose dad Michael was an excellent player for the All Whites back in the day, has secured a three-year contract with Aberdeen. He was able to do this because of his impressive performance in the Central Coast Mariners’ A-League title run. This includes their victory over Melbourne City in the grand final in June where they scored 6-1.

McGarry was expecting a remarkable week ahead as he began and performed remarkably in Aberdeen's 2-0 EUFA Conference League surprise victory against German Bundesliga team, Eintracht Frankfurt, on Thursday (Friday NZ time).

In a game between Rangers and Aberdeen at Hampden Park, Captain James Tavernier successfully scored the decisive goal, leading his team to a 1-0 win and securing the trophy.

The ex-Wellington Phoenix fullback recently had his first major performance after being out for a significant amount of time due to a hamstring injury.

McGarry's folks traveled by plane from Dunedin to witness two important matches and to get acquainted with their newborn grandson, Storm.

McGarry expressed his pride in presenting a show for them during the Eintracht Frankfurt victory when speaking to the Aberdeen Press and Journal.

"It's wonderful to have them with us."

McGarry was optimistic that his past participation in the A-League final in front of a crowd of 26,527 would prepare him well for Hampden Park.

"I've experienced participating in a major championship and performing in front of a large audience, therefore I am familiar with that kind of situation," he shared with the Press and Journal.

"It instills trust in me to have the experience of having been through that before."

"I can feel more relaxed and concentrate on the game without any jitters."

According to McGarry, he keeps his champion's medal from the Mariners in a special spot where he can admire it daily.

He sat on the bench until the last quarter when he took over for Johnny Hayes as a left wingback.

Aberdeen is eager to win their first Scottish domestic final since they last claimed victory in the League Cup back in 2014. However, up until that point, they had yet to take a shot at the goalpost. Manager Barry Robson was hoping that by bringing in left-winger McGarry and Portuguese substitute striker Duk, they would add some much-needed attacking power.

However, Tavernier, who holds the record for scoring the most goals as a defender in professional football history, was the one who ultimately sealed the victory as Rangers were crowned champions for the first time in a decade.
