Scott Mills halted Celebrity Race Across The World filming due to 'awful' illness
Feeling a throbbing pain in his head and hearing about the dengue fever epidemic in Brazil, Scott Mills was certain that he had caught the virus from mosquitoes while on Celebrity Race Across The World.
During his journey through South America, the 51-year-old BBC Radio 2 presenter felt very sick. He experienced such severe symptoms that he had to ask the film producers to stop filming for three days.
However, Scott's sickness turned out to be different from what he initially expected.
He said to Metro.co.uk: ‘I began to experience severe headaches – something I rarely get – but the pain was so intense that one day I had to cancel filming, saying, “I can’t do it today, I’m really sorry.”’
Clearly, a medical professional was present who ensured I had a meal and provided me with medication in an attempt to alleviate my symptoms. Despite their efforts, the ailment persisted for three days.
On the reality show Celebrity Race Across The World, Scott's partner and spouse Sam Vaughan, aged 35, was the one who ultimately discovered the true source of his discomfort.
Scott remembered when Sam asked him when was the last time he had a coffee, and he realized it had been a while and he was experiencing some serious caffeine withdrawal.
The couple argued about the broadcaster's love for coffee as they journeyed from Belem, Brazil to Frutillar, Chile with few resources, no internet, and a small budget.
In the competition, they race against Kelly Brook and her husband Jeremy Parisi; Jeff Brazier and his son Freddy Brazier; and Kola Bokinni and his cousin Mary Ellen to see who can get to the final destination in the quickest time.
However, Scott almost jeopardized their standing in the race by significantly reducing their limited budget.
In the blog, Sam shared with us that he starts his day by drinking not just one, but multiple cups of coffee. It seems he can't function without his daily caffeine fix.
I found it annoying constantly shelling out more cash on coffee. He would respond, "I need it to get through the day." I relented, saying, "Alright, I'll allow you to have it."
Not having coffee wasn't the only problem Scott faced on the show. He confessed that there were times when he 'completely despised' it.
While riding the bus, Scott became overwhelmed and expressed that he truly believed it was the end for him.
He remembered: 'It was really hot and we were on a bus. The air conditioning didn't reach all the way to the bathroom, so when you went in, it was like 50 degrees Celsius.'
Someone had recently defecated in that area and I was nauseated, feeling like I was going to vomit. I even had the thought, "This might be it."
I couldn't stop vomiting. The smell of feces was overwhelming. I thought to myself, this is the most disgusting thing I've ever experienced.
Scott and Sam had another problem with a bus. This time, the bus stopped working and they were stuck on the road for a long time. It was the most irritating experience of Scott's life.
He said: 'Nobody in Brazil speaks English, so you have no idea how long it will take for another bus to arrive or for them to repair this one.'
I think not being able to communicate in the same language was the most difficult part. I have never felt so frustrated before.
But Scott admitted his own faults: 'We are fortunate that most people usually speak English and we tend to be reluctant to learn other languages.'
However, Scott's time on Celebrity Race Across the World hasn't completely soured his love for travel. In fact, he has found some inspiration for his upcoming honeymoon and has been jotting down ideas.
Scott, who admits to being a workaholic, expressed his disappointment at not being allowed to have a phone during the Celebrity Race Across The World. He described the experience as 'terrible' but has decided to keep his phone locked in a safe during their upcoming wedding celebration in October.
"I've achieved it in the past and I am confident I can achieve it again. It helps me concentrate and I genuinely love doing it. It has been a very enjoyable experience," he expressed.
Scott, who previously expressed a strong dislike for camping, has had a change of heart about vacations after experiencing the challenges of outdoor living on the BBC program.
After this experience, I realized that there is no need to spend a lot of money on expensive hotels. Scott exclaimed.
As the adventure unfolds, we have found ourselves in some unexpected accommodations.
In simple terms, at the end of our journey, we stayed in an Ibis hotel and it felt very luxurious to me, like being at the Ritz.
However, he believes that Rylan Clark would not succeed in the Celebrity Race Across The World.
Scott mentioned that he was chatting with Rylan recently. He expressed doubt that Rylan could accomplish a certain task, to which Rylan agreed. Scott reaffirmed his belief that Rylan would definitely not be able to do it.
I take the subway to work every day, but Rylan doesn't. This could pose a challenge for him.
I am very familiar with using public transportation. I am not someone who always needs to take a taxi - but participating in Celebrity Race Across The World was on a whole new level.
