Scotland thrash Romania to set up Ireland decider
In the Rugby World Cup 2023, Scotland and Romania faced off in Pool B. Scotland dominated the game, winning with a score of 84 to Romania's zero. Scotland scored numerous tries, with players like Watson, Price, Graham (who scored 4), M Fagerson, Harris, Smith, Healy, Matthews, and Darge contributing to the victory. Healy and Horne made 11 successful conversions. On the other hand, Romania failed to score any points, resulting in a complete shutout.
Scotland dominated Romania with a whopping 84-0 win, scoring an impressive 12 tries. This has put them in a solid position for a thrilling match against Ireland in Pool B of the Rugby World Cup.
In the first half, Darcy Graham managed to score three tries, while Hamish Watson, Ali Price, and Matt Fagerson also scored before the half-time break.
Chris Harris, Ollie Smith, and Ben Healy, along with first-time player Johnny Matthews, Rory Darge, and Graham, all scored points in the second half of the game. Healy and George Horne continued their streak of successful kicks.
The Scottish team fell short by five points from achieving their highest ever victory against Ivory Coast during the World Cup tournament in 1995.
On Sunday, South Africa was considered the most likely team to beat Tonga with a bonus point. Therefore, in order to increase their chances of advancing to the knockout stages, Scotland had to obtain a full five points in Lille.
It is probable that Gregor Townsend's team will have to defeat Ireland and prevent Andy Farrell's team from receiving a bonus point in Paris on the following Saturday.
Scots Satisfied, Rugby Discomfort
Scotland won against the opposition they faced, but their victory was only a warm-up compared to the upcoming challenge against Ireland in Paris next weekend. The match was called a rugby test, but it lacked any real test of skills. Although satisfying for Scotland, the game was not enjoyable for rugby fans as a whole.
Townsend's squad will embark on the upcoming journey feeling positive and confident due to their abundance of successful tries, as predicted. Romania, on the other hand, currently have limited funding and playing opportunities resulting in a team of mediocre players. When combined with poor discipline, the outcome is a crushing defeat.
During the first half, the team received three yellow cards, two of which were for head-to-shoulder incidents; however, none of these were upgraded to red by the officials in the video review room. This did not benefit their performance. Scotland had several chances to score more goals and even if they had scored 100 times, it would not have been an overstatement of their superiority in the game.
Right from the beginning, they displayed a positive mindset. Watson kickstarted the game with some vigorous charges, and the flanker - who was aiming for more playing time against Ireland - began the scoring spree. Ollie Smith and Cam Redpath paved the way for the first breaks, and Watson ended up on the receiving end of a brilliant finish after the Romanian defence contracted.
Healy's performance in kicking was flawless throughout the entire night and he successfully scored a difficult conversion. Even then, Romania was struggling to keep up. However, their struggles only intensified as the game progressed.
Prior to scoring, Graham made a significant contribution by providing an assist when he quickly moved into an open area and passed the ball to Price. This display of skill was impressive and overwhelming for Romania. Healy successfully added the extra points, resulting in a 14-0 lead after only 18 minutes.
Looking at the negative aspects for Scotland, Ireland may have been paying attention to mistakes such as dropped balls, missed touches, and a few questionable line-out plays. However, overall the game was mostly dominated by Scotland. Graham scored his first, and the team's third, with a great angle off a pass from Price.
Romania Sees Yellows, Not Reds
When the rugby match had the score of three tries to none in favor of the opposing team, Romania just had to start getting players sent off, and that's exactly what happened. One of their players, Robert Irimescu, hit Healy with a high tackle and was given a yellow card. However, the referee, Wayne Barnes, mentioned that the tackle didn't pose a significant threat, which is why it wasn't given a red card.
Shortly after, their team was reduced to 13 players as Florian Rosu entered the side of a maul heading towards their own goal line. Scotland took advantage of the situation and scored quickly with Harris making an excellent setup for Graham to score his second goal. This secured Scotland the bonus point.
Romania faced unyielding pressure and found themselves with only two players on the field, which exhausted their team. Fagerson was able to score just before halftime, and Graham was able to finish his hat-trick right before the end of the first half with Harris performing incredibly well once again.
During the game, a Romanian player was sent off to the sideline after colliding with Smith's head using his shoulder. The incident occurred in the midst of the game's scores. Despite the obviousness of the violation, the referee only gave the player a warning which seemed lenient given the severity of the infraction.
The attempts were continuous and frequent. Harris was awarded a goal at the beginning of the second half thanks to an excellent crossfield kick from Healy. Smith returned a wayward Romania kick from his own side and scored all the way to the end. Soon after, Healy scored another point, which led Scotland to surpass 60 points.
Matthews replaced the previous player and the hooker, who had scored an impressive number of tries, did exactly what many people anticipated. Kinghorn made a beautiful run from far back and Horne passed the ball easily to Matthews, who then quickly ran towards the goal line to score the try.
After a few moments, the hooker who had scored a try switched roles and became a hooker who assisted with a try by passing the ball to Darge who then made it through. This brought the score to 77-0, but Romania still had more difficulties to face. Graham managed to weave his way into the try zone for the fourth time, bringing the final score to 80 points.
The Romania team appeared to be eagerly waiting for the game to end, while the Scotland team seemed to still have a strong desire to win and advance to the rugby world competition in Paris. Although it may be challenging, they are optimistic about their chances.
