OpenAI pauses ChatGPT voice that resembles Scarlett Johansson

The tone of the voice was strangely comparable to that of the female performer.

One of OpenAI's ChatGPT voices has been temporarily stopped due to concerns about its origin. Actress Scarlett Johansson has expressed her unease with the voice, claiming that it is reminiscent of her own.

Johansson, who played the role of an artificial intelligence assistant in the movie "Her" back in 2013, released an official statement stating that the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman had contacted her in September to lend her voice for ChatGPT, which was intended to form a liaison between artistic minds and technological corporations. However, Johansson rejected the offer.

Johansson expressed her surprise, frustration and disbelief upon listening to the demo that was made public. She was taken aback by the fact that Mr. Altman opted for a vocal style that was almost identical to hers, to the point where even her closest buddies and media outlets couldn't differentiate between the two.

Sky voice was removed by OpenAI after she hired lawyers who sent letters to Altman inquiring about the voice creation process. Johansson mentioned that OpenAI agreed to take down the voice, although they did so reluctantly.

In September, ChatGPT started offering voice features for the first time ever. This company has its headquarters in San Francisco.

OpenAI recently debuted their most recent model update, known as GPT-4o, which has improved speed performance in text, audio, and video.

Altman seemed to allude to a movie from 2013 in which Johansson portrayed an artificial intelligence assistant. Altman posted the term "her" on social media platform X on the same day that GPT-40 was revealed.

On Monday, OpenAI wrote a blog post trying to explain how they made the voices for their AI model.

The company declared that they sampled the voices of Breeze, Cove, Ember, Juniper, and Sky from voice actors they had a working relationship with. They also mentioned that numerous voice and screen actors submitted their voices for consideration, with hundreds of submissions in total.

They proceeded to clarify that the voices of AI should not intentionally copy the unique voice of a famous person.

OpenAI clarified that Sky's voice is not a copy of Scarlett Johansson's voice, as it comes from a different actress who used her own genuine speaking voice.

"We cannot disclose the names of our voice actors for privacy reasons," they stated.
