ParalympicsGB | Iconic dame sarah storey storms to 18th gold

Sarah Storey

She utilized her power on climbs with gradients of 4.5% and 4.7% to make up ground and finished in first place with a time of 20 minutes and 22.15 seconds. She was just 4.69 seconds ahead of the top competitor from the host country, while Australia's Alana Forster won the bronze medal.

"I have always been strong, so I understood that climbing was essential to ensure I was pushing myself to the limit and giving it my all," Storey explained.

In a 20-minute race, you don't necessarily need to take time to recover. This race is 10km and has hills, but we often do similar courses back home, so I have had plenty of chances to practice.

"I realized that I was behind by seven seconds, which was to be expected since the initial part of the race was downhill and allowed for some strategic pacing. I was confidant that I could make up time during the climbs and on the flat sections afterwards where I could unleash my full power."

In the meantime, Fran Brown achieved her first Paralympic medal by earning a silver in the C1-3 time trial.

Brown achieved a fourth-place finish in her first triathlon at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and also made her debut on the Paralympic podium as a cyclist for the first time.

After starting in third place during the initial flat part of the race, she picked up speed in the latter half and overtook Sweden's Anna Beck to finish in second place. The gold medal was awarded to Maike Hausberger from Germany.

"I'm so thrilled," Brown exclaimed. "I was just hoping for any medal and winning silver is incredible."

The race was quite difficult, with the surprise cobblestones throwing everyone off guard, and the steep hills adding to the challenge. However, it was a refreshing change of pace.

I am a member of a highly successful team, and I thrive on that positive energy. By this point, everyone else on the team had received a medal, and I was eager to join them in that achievement.
