Sarah Storey explains that every race has its own unique characteristics. However, the end result of winning the gold medal consistently remains unchanged.

The talented cyclist from Britain achieved victory in the women's C4-5 road race for the fourth consecutive time, earning her 19th gold medal at the Paralympic Games.

However, the 46-year-old Storey faced tough competition on Friday when French teenager Heidi Gaugain came close to winning in a thrilling race. The fans, waving flags and cheering on the sidelines in the Paris suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois, added to the excitement of the event.

Gaugain, who is 19 years old, took the lead on the last uphill part of the 71-kilometer race and quickly built up a strong advantage.

Veteran cyclist Storey made a strong comeback in the last 100 meters to cross the finish line first, clocking in at 1 hour, 54 minutes, and 24 seconds. Gaugain, who finished just half a wheel behind, ended up with her third silver medal of the Games.

"It doesn't make a difference if you're competing in a cycling event at the Paralympics, the Olympics, or a major tour. You must have faith in your intuition and just focus on racing," Storey shared with The Associated Press.

"Having a variety of skills and strategies is key to winning a bike race. I have been lucky enough to always have the right tool for each competition."

Storey is competing in her ninth Paralympic Games. By winning the C5 individual time trial, she has achieved a remarkable feat as the only athlete to have won a medal in all nine editions of the Paralympics since 1992.

Sarah Storey started her athletic career as a swimmer and was successful, earning her first gold medal in the pool. However, after experiencing an ear infection during the 2004 Athens Paralympics, she had to temporarily stop swimming. This setback led her to transition to cycling, and she went on to win her first Paralympic gold medals in cycling at the 2008 Beijing Games.

She explained that each race is unique, and you must observe how it unfolds to make smart decisions. This aspect is what adds excitement to the experience. It can be challenging to stay motivated when there are uncertainties and the goal is to win a race. You have to be prepared for anything because you never know what will happen until it actually does.

Story was born with a nonfunctional left hand due to complications with the umbilical cord wrapping around her arm in the womb. Ever since, she has been advocating for better accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

Storey stated that Paralympic athletes have received amazing help and chances. He believes this is symbolic of how society can provide support and opportunities for disabled individuals to succeed and flourish.

"It's important to analyze and understand why this is amazing and why athletes receive such strong support, and how we can use that to benefit society. This empowerment is crucial."

Storey, who will turn 47 in a month, is considering the possibility of competing in the next Paralympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028, despite acknowledging the effect of aging.

"I was feeling some stiffness before the race. Definitely. But that's to be expected, isn't it?" she asked. "It's all about figuring out how to handle the aging process as an athlete, and I wanted to continue being an athlete for as long as possible. I never imagined I would participate in eight Games, let alone nine."

The thrilling conclusion on Friday and the battle against rising star Gaugain paved the way for future competitions.

Storey mentioned that every time he gets ready to start a race, he is putting himself in a vulnerable position. However, he continues to do so and always manages to find a way to come out on top. He hopes to keep this winning streak going for a long time.
