On September 5th, San Marino achieved their first win in competitive play by defeating Liechtenstein 1-0 in the Nations League. This victory comes two decades after their only other win, which was also against Liechtenstein.
The Nations League D match wasn't exactly a battle between top teams, as San Marino is ranked 210th and Liechtenstein 199th in FIFA rankings. However, Nicko Sensoli's goal in the 53rd minute has surely earned him legendary status in his country.
San Marino's only other victory happened in their 69th match, when they achieved a 1-0 triumph against Liechtenstein in a friendly game in 2004.
Their supporters have gone through 140 games without a victory in that time, and the 19-year-old Sensoli's scoring ignited enthusiastic celebrations at the San Marino stadium.
Sensoli was not alive yet when San Marino last won a game. It took a while for the game to end, with eight extra minutes added on before San Marino's victory was official. This win placed the home team at the top of Group 1, which also includes Gibraltar.
