Sam Morsy: Ipswich Town captain did not wear rainbow armband because of 'religious beliefs'
Ipswich Town's captain, Sam Morsy, did not don a rainbow armband in Saturday's Premier League match against Nottingham Forest due to his "religious beliefs," as stated by the club.
Teams in the Premier League are demonstrating their commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports by participating in the charity Stonewall's Rainbow Laces campaign from November 29 to December 5.
Egyptian international Morsy, 33, decided against wearing the rainbow captain's armband during the 1-0 defeat at Forest. Ipswich is also set to face Crystal Palace at home on Tuesday.
Ipswich emphasized their dedication to being a completely inclusive club that welcomes all individuals, but they also acknowledged and respected the choice made by midfielder Morsy.
"Ipswich expressed their enthusiastic support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces initiative and affirmed their commitment to the LGBTQ+ community by advocating for equality and acceptance," the club announced on Monday.
Throughout this year's initiative, players from the men's and women's first teams of the club attended our Foundation's regular LGBTQ+ football sessions. Additionally, the club collaborated with Nottingham Forest to express a shared commitment to solidarity and inclusivity before the match on Saturday.
Several additional activities are scheduled for Tuesday's home match against Crystal Palace, such as taking control of the stadium's large screen just before the game starts.
“We also honor our captain Sam Morsy's choice not to wear the rainbow armband, as it aligns with his religious beliefs.”
