Sam Kerr, the captain of Australia's soccer team, and Kristie Mewis, a midfielder for the United States, have shared the exciting news that they are going to have a baby in 2025.
Kerr, a Chelsea player, and Kristie, who plays for West Ham United, shared the exciting news on Instagram, featuring a collection of black-and-white photos. In the images, they displayed an ultrasound scan while Kerr pointed to Mewis' growing baby bump.
"The Mewis-Kerr family is expecting a baby in 2025!" the caption said.
Numerous soccer athletes, teams, and the Women’s Super League (WSL) extended their congratulations to the couple via social media.
West Ham shared an image of their team jersey featuring the name “Mewis-Kerr” along with the year “2025” on the back.
"Big congratulations to Kristie and her partner Sam on the exciting news that they are going to have their first baby," stated West Ham's post on X.
Chelsea extended their congratulations to the duo, expressing, "What an amazing way to kick off the week."
Kerr, the highest scorer in Australian history, has been an essential member of the Chelsea team since 2020. During her time there, she has contributed to their impressive streak of five consecutive Women's Super League titles and has also played a significant role in securing the Women’s FA Cup three times.
The 31-year-old forward has been sidelined for the entire 2024 calendar year due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and is not expected to make a comeback until next year.
Kerr's American teammate, Mewis, was part of NJ/NY Gotham FC in the National Women’s Soccer League in the U.S. She made the transition to England in December 2023 to join West Ham, another club based in London, similar to Chelsea.
Kerr and Mewis started their relationship in 2021 and became engaged in September 2023.
Although Kerr and Mewis' announcement was warmly welcomed by their supporters, the post also attracted a number of offensive comments.
Chelsea Pride, an organization that supports LGBTQ+ individuals connected to the London football club, spoke out against the “hateful remarks.”
“There's no room for homophobia in football, at Chelsea, or in our community,” it stated. “It's both upsetting and angering to witness social media filled with hate when we ought to be embracing love, pride, and togetherness.”
The statement noted that Chelsea had to disable comments on their Instagram post regarding the announcement from Kerr and Mewis.
“At Chelsea Pride, we firmly oppose all forms of homophobia with steadfast determination and enthusiasm,” it stated.
"We advocate for a football community where all players, fans, and families can express themselves freely and be celebrated, without any fear or discrimination."
