Chelsea Pride condemns abuse directed at Sam Kerr after baby announcement
Chelsea Pride has denounced the homophobic insults aimed at the club's forward, Sam Kerr, following her announcement about expecting a child with her fiancée, Kristie Mewis.
The 31-year-old captain of Australia announced the exciting news on her Instagram on Monday, sharing a post that said, "Mewis-Kerr baby arriving in 2025!"
She shared the news along with a photo of the couple sharing a kiss, highlighting Mewis's baby bump. In response, Chelsea Pride has condemned the online remarks aimed at Kerr and Mewis, who plays for West Ham.
"Homophobia has no place in football, at Chelsea, or anywhere in our society," stated a message shared on social media. "It’s both disheartening and angering to witness a wave of hateful remarks online when we should be embracing love, pride, and togetherness."
During the weekend and today, our club had to disable comments and even remove some posts—posts that were meant to be celebrated. These included the meaningful message behind Rainbow Laces and the fantastic announcement that Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis are expecting a child in 2025.
"'No to Hate' goes beyond being a mere phrase; it serves as a rallying call. It reminds us of our ongoing struggle for justice, genuine inclusivity, and a sport that welcomes all individuals without discrimination. We will not remain quiet. At Chelsea Pride, we boldly oppose every instance of homophobia with relentless determination and fervor."
"We advocate for a football community where every player, supporter, and family can express themselves freely and be celebrated without fear or discrimination. This is our sport and our team, and we are dedicated to this mission: Hate will not prevail in this space. We will consistently champion love, togetherness, and a welcoming future for football."
