In their EURO 2024 opening match, Scotland had Ryan Porteous sent off with a red card just before half-time, leaving them with only 10 players. This happened against Germany at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Friday.

During the 45th minute of the game, Porteous committed a foul against Ilkay Gundogan, causing the German midfielder to cry out in pain while requesting a penalty. At first, the referee, Clement Turpin, did not signal for a penalty, but after reviewing the incident on the monitor and seeking advice from the video assistant referee (VAR), he awarded Germany a penalty kick and issued a red card to Porteous.

As a consequence, he made history as the initial athlete to be ejected from his first Euro game in a similar way to Aleksandar Dragovic for Austria against Hungary in 2016. He also became the initial Scotland player to be issued a red card on a grand stage event (World Cup or EUROs) since Craig Burley against Morocco during the FIFA World Cup of 1998.

Porteous committed a breach of Law 12, resulting in a direct red card during the football game. The Laws of the Game dictate that certain actions may result in a straight red card, including:

Regarding Porteous, the second explanation is accurate as his move was thoughtless (or in other words, it was a foul), leading to the Barcelona midfielder being unable to score a goal.

He had both of his boots up and they were against Gundogan's right leg. This made it more likely for the referee to give him a straight red card instead of a yellow one.
