Rune always plays Djokovic tough. Can he do it on the Grand Slam stage?

During his brief time on the tour, Holger Rune has demonstrated that he has the skills and confidence to challenge the formidable Novak Djokovic on the tennis court.

Over the last two years, they have competed in four matches at top ATP tournaments, and every single one has gone the full three sets.

Rune impressively outperformed Djokovic in the 2022 Paris Masters final and then did it again in the Rome quarterfinals six months later.

Despite this, Djokovic has emerged victorious in their previous two meetings - a rematch in Paris and at the ATP Finals, both in 2023. So far, the Serbian player has not faced any significant challenges from the up-and-coming Danish star on the Grand Slam platform.

On Monday, we will witness Rune's progress as he faces Djokovic at Centre Court during the fourth round of Wimbledon.

"I anticipate a challenging match. I believe it will always be tough when facing Novak," stated Rune, who is currently behind in their head-to-head matches with a 2-3 record.

"He is known as one of the fiercest competitors in history and has had a remarkable career. I am anticipating nothing less than an exceptional performance from him."

I am aware that he had surgery, but from what I observed during our practice sessions in the first week, it seems like he is playing quite well and appears to be feeling confident on the field.

"I need to perform at my peak in order to be in with a shot at winning, so that's my goal for this upcoming game."

Rune needs to improve from his performance in the third round, where he was losing to the 220th-ranked player, Quentin Halys, by two sets before coming back to win in five sets.

But the young adult has demonstrated the capability to perform admirably on the grandest platforms.

Rune is aiming for his fourth Grand Slam quarterfinal and second consecutive one at Wimbledon. He is also driven by the opportunity to break a nine-match losing streak against top-five players.

At Wimbledon, Putintseva finally put an end to Swiatek's impressive 21-match win streak, as she continues to build her own winning streak.

Djokovic is now the second best player in the world rankings. Earlier this year, he was the top player and won the first three major tournaments of 2021. During the US Open, he played against an 18-year-old player named Rune in his first match.

In the blog post, it was mentioned that Rune, after initially qualifying for the match, managed to win one set and showed his ability to perform well in important matches. However, he was unable to keep up with Djokovic physically, who went on to win the remaining three sets with scores of 6-1, 6-2, and 6-1.

"I have a great relationship with him. He's a kind person who has always been supportive of me and my team, and we reciprocate that support. I make sure to make myself accessible to him for any practice, advice, guidance, or anything else he may need," Djokovic shared.

I've known him since he was little... We practiced together on various types of terrain and spent a lot of time training.

In the last season, Collins is aiming to achieve success during Wimbledon.

“We have a mutual respect for each other and I believe our tennis styles are quite alike. However, once we step onto the court to compete, our competitive fire is evident.”

I think we're in for an exciting match on Monday when we see this player in action. He's a standout athlete who thrives in high-pressure situations, especially on grass courts. He's definitely a tough competitor to face.

"I will need to play my top tennis in order to win."
