Cristiano Ronaldo barely missed getting hit by a fan who leaped from the stands to reach the Portuguese player after their 2-0 loss to Georgia at the European Championship on Wednesday.
A video that has been shared all over social media shows a person jumping over the players' tunnel at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, just as Ronaldo was exiting the field.
A staff member quickly moved to protect the former soccer player from Real Madrid and Manchester United, while other security personnel hurried to intercept the fan, who disappeared from view.
A puzzled Ronaldo came to a halt, but seemed to be unscathed.
The Portugal Football Federation acknowledged the situation but declined to provide any further information. UEFA, the governing body of European football, stated that they were informed about the incident.
The police in Gelsenkirchen stated that the issue was not within their jurisdiction.
In Portugal's last game against Turkey in Dortmund last Saturday, he was approached by four fans who ran onto the field wanting to take selfies with him.
In the 69th minute, Ronaldo kindly greeted a young fan who managed to sneak past security to come onto the field. However, he appeared annoyed when other fans tried to approach him later in the match and after the game had ended.
After the game, Portugal coach Roberto Martinez expressed worry about the safety of the Al Nassr forward, mentioning that the player was lucky to escape without any injuries.
Martinez expressed his appreciation for fans who show support for prominent figures in the industry. However, he also noted the importance of considering the players' feelings in such situations and being cautious with any potentially harmful intentions.
UEFA has stated that keeping the stadium safe and secure is their top priority. They will be implementing extra safety measures to stop fans who are trying to take selfies from entering the field.
Even though Portugal was surprised by Georgia's victory, they still managed to make it to the next round of Euro 2024. Their next match will be against Slovenia in the round of 16 in Frankfurt on Monday.
