Pitch invaders keen for Cristiano Ronaldo selfies disrupt Turkey v Portugal Euro 2024 match

Four spectators, one of whom was a child, invaded the field during a Euro 2024 game in pursuit of a personal goal – snapping a selfie with Cristiano Ronaldo.

During the latter part of Portugal's game against Turkey, there were disruptions caused by several individuals who were able to elude security and enter the field at the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund, Germany.

Ronaldo gladly agreed to take a photo with the first enthusiastic fan who ran onto the field during the 69th minute. The fan quickly pulled out their phone to capture the moment.

The young person was later ran off the field and was eventually caught by the staff - though not before he said goodbye to the audience.

After about 15 minutes, an elderly onlooker attempted to replicate the same action, only to be met with a contrasting response from the ex-Manchester United player.

Ronaldo raised his arms in frustration and walked away from the fan who attempted to embrace him.

In the final moments of the game, a third trespasser entered the field and dashed past Ronaldo while he was near the corner defending.

After the warning, the security breaches persisted as two additional fans attempted to approach the forward player.

The initial person was taken down to the ground when he attempted to get close while holding a phone, and the second person was halted as he tried to confront Ronaldo as the teams exited the field.

Portugal's coach expresses worry about fans running onto the field.

During a post-game interview, Portugal coach Roberto Martinez expressed worry about the interruptions, stating that he was relieved that the fans' intentions were positive.

He added: "We appreciate when fans acknowledge the major celebrities and icons."

We all agree on that point. However, it was a particularly challenging moment when the players' intentions were called into question. We must proceed with caution in such situations to protect the players.

I believe that kind of behavior is not appropriate in a football game.

Portugal triumphed 3-0 and guaranteed their place in the next round of the Euros with one group game left.

They will play against Georgia on Wednesday at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen. This is where England emerged victorious against Serbia in their opening match of the tournament.
