Cristiano Ronaldo just avoided being hit by a fan who jumped from the crowd to get to him at Euros - WTOP News
In Duesseldorf, Germany, Cristiano Ronaldo narrowly escaped harm when a fan leaped from the stands in an attempt to get near the soccer player during Portugal's match against Georgia at the European Championship on Wednesday.
A video that quickly spread on social media shows a person jumping over the players' tunnel at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen while Ronaldo was walking towards the locker room.
A security guard quickly moved to protect the ex-Real Madrid and Manchester United player, while other security personnel hurried towards the fan who then disappeared from view.
Ronaldo looks confused as he pauses, but doesn't seem to be injured. Portugal was defeated 2-0 in the game.
The Football Federation of Portugal acknowledged the situation, but did not provide any further information. UEFA, the governing body of European soccer, stated that they were informed about the incident.
Ronaldo is a well-known figure in the sports world, with a huge number of fans. He has 632 million followers on Instagram and almost 112 million on X.
In Portugal's last game against Turkey in Dortmund on Saturday, he was approached on the field by four fans who wanted to take selfies with him.
Ronaldo took a photo with a young fan who managed to get onto the field without being stopped by security in the 69th minute. However, he seemed annoyed when more fans entered the field during the game and after the game ended.
After the game, Portugal's coach, Roberto Martinez, expressed his relief that the Al Nassr forward was not injured and voiced his worries about the player's safety.
"We all enjoy having fans who can identify the prominent celebrities and icons," he explained. "However, it was a challenging situation to navigate - if their intentions are misguided, the players are put at risk and we must proceed with caution."
The 39-year-old soccer player has made history by participating in six European Championships. Even though he hasn't scored in this year's tournament yet, he still holds the record for the most goals ever scored at the Euros, with a total of 14.
Even though Portugal got a surprising defeat from Georgia, they still managed to make it to the next stage of Euro 2024. They will be facing Slovenia in the round of 16 in Frankfurt on Monday.
