Jenrick leads race for Tory leadership after first round of voting
Robert Jenrick is currently in the lead to become the next leader of the Conservative Party.
Today, 121 members of the Conservative Party voted in the initial round of leadership voting, resulting in the elimination of one candidate and leaving five remaining.
In the initial challenge, Mr. Jenrick earned 28 votes, while Kemi Badenoch received 22 votes and James Cleverly received 21 votes.
The member of parliament from Newark has been traveling around the country for the last two months to gather support for his campaign to become the leader of the Conservative party. He was one of the first MPs to declare their intention to run for the leadership position.
Previous Home Secretary Priti Patel was the initial candidate to be eliminated from the competition, receiving only 14 votes.
It is anticipated that the number of candidates will be narrowed down to four before the Conservative Party Conference begins in Birmingham on September 29th.
After the candidates present their platforms, there will be a hustings where MPs will vote to reduce the number of contenders to just two.
Party members will choose the leader in a decision that will be announced on November 2nd.
