The Lord Mayor, Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung, the Leader of Leeds City Council, Councillor James Lewis, and the chief executive Tom Riordan have released a statement together regarding the recent passing of Rob Burrow CBE.

We feel great sorrow over the death of Rob Burrow. He was a distinguished member of our community and a courageous figure who inspired countless people, whether in the world of rugby or beyond.

Rob had already cemented his place as a true legend of rugby league, having put in outstanding performances for Leeds Rhinos as well as the English and Great British teams. However, his fight against Motor Neurone Disease (MND) proved to be the greatest challenge of his career. Despite this, he faced the illness with remarkable courage, bravery, and grace.

His efforts to spread knowledge about MND, as well as to generate funds to establish a specialized Care Center for Motor Neurone Disease in our community, has been truly remarkable. This has led a multitude of individuals to participate in the Rob Burrow Marathon, alongside him, his loved ones, and Kevin Sinfield, to assist in the fundraising efforts which have gathered millions for charitable causes.

Rob's accomplishments go beyond just sports and the city of Leeds. He once said, "In a world full of challenges, we need to have the courage to aspire." Those very words have already been placed on a wall in the city center. In the following weeks, we will come up with an appropriate way to make sure that Rob's influence and achievements continue to thrive in Leeds.

Currently, our focus and concern are directed towards Lindsey, the beloved wife of Rob, and their offspring, as well as Rob's acquaintances, relatives, and colleagues. Our hearts go out to everyone who had the privilege of crossing paths with him.
