Dame Jilly Cooper is a dominant figure in the literary world. Having written 44 books, she is cherished for her provocative stories and unforgettable characters.
By exploring themes of social politics, relationships, and scandal in the English countryside, Cooper rose to prominence in the "bonkbusters" category, a label that emerged during the 1970s and 1980s.
The Rutshire Chronicles is one of the author's most notable series. Taking place in a picturesque setting filled with showjumping, grand estates, and immense wealth, the first book, Riders (£7.99, Amazon.co.uk), was released in 1985. It explores the misbehavior of affluent individuals. Central to the story is Rupert Campbell-Black, a wealthy and self-important showjumper, who has a longstanding feud with another showjumper, Jake Lovell. The provocative cover art made a significant impact on the mainstream publishing industry.
The follow-up book in the series, Rivals (£9.69, Amazon.co.uk), gained even more attention. The story picks up with Rupert after his showjumping career has ended, as he now serves as the Tory minister for sport. The antics become even more outrageous in this installment. Set in the 1980s, it offers a humorous critique of the wealthy rural upper class and their luxurious lifestyle.
In the novel, Lord Baddingham is eager to keep his television rights. To help him, he brings on board Irish talk show sensation Declan O'Hara and the charming yet cocky producer Cameron Cook. Their relationship quickly deteriorates, igniting a whirlwind of controversy. Then, the troublemaker Rupert Campbell-Black arrives, making the situation even more chaotic.
