Rey Mysterio Sr. has died, according to his family.

The wrestling icon, whose real name is Miguel Angel Lopez Dias, was the uncle of Rey, a current WWE superstar.

The Mexican wrestling organization Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide announced the news on their social media platforms. They shared a message expressing their sadness over the passing of Miguel Angel Lopez Dias, who was widely known as Rey Mysterio Sr.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends, and we offer our prayers for his peaceful everlasting rest.

Mysterio, who passed away at the age of 66, started his wrestling career in 1976 and officially hung up his boots in 2009. His son, Rey, and grandson, Dominik, continue to be active in WWE, with Rey being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2023.

The unfortunate event follows closely on the heels of the passing of Mysterio Jnr's father, Roberto Gutierrez, who died at the age of 76 just a week earlier.

Wrestling icon Rey Mysterio Sr. has sadly died at the age of 66, according to his family.

Mysterio Snr was the uncle of Rey Mysterio Jnr, who is currently a star in WWE and a member of its Hall of Fame.

Mysterio Jr.'s son, Dominik, is also active in the wrestling promotion and has had a rivalry with his dad in recent years.

Mysterio initially pursued boxing, but he discovered wrestling through his coaches.

He made his debut in January 1976 and, during his career, competed for organizations such as Pro Wrestling Revolution, Tijuana Wrestling, and the World Wrestling Association.

To differentiate the star from his nephew, he was commonly known as Rey Mysterio Snr, while Dominik is his grandnephew. His grandniece, Aalyah, has made several appearances in WWE as well.

After his father's death, Rey Jnr shared on Instagram: "You showed us what it means to love and have a strong marriage while raising four sons. You didn't just set the standard; you embodied it perfectly right up until your last moments. You were a wonderful husband, a caring father, a loving grandfather, a remarkable son and brother, and a fantastic father-in-law."

"You went through every item on that list and I can genuinely say that most of the qualities I have come from you. You battled until the very end, and I understand that your greatest fear was to leave Mom behind. But I want to reassure you that she won’t be alone, and we will always take care of her."

You're up in heaven with God now, watching over us and smiling, while we face the challenges of life until we meet again. You will always hold a special place in our hearts and will be dearly missed. Rest in peace, Pops.

"Sending thoughts and prayers to the Mysterio family," a fan wrote on social media.

One person commented, "Wow, Rey has been going through some really tough times lately. He lost his dad, and now his uncle has passed away too. Wishing the Mysterio family all the strength they can find."

Dominik, on the other hand, posted a tribute video for his uncle on his Instagram, writing, "Rest in peace, Uncle," and added a crown emoji. He also shared some pictures of his uncle, along with a black heart emoji.
