Simms double helps Coventry sink QPR

Ellis Simms came to Coventry from Everton during the summer.

Ellis Simms netted his debut goals for Coventry City, aiding the team to secure a win in their away match against Queen's Park Rangers.

The newcomer to the team, who joined during the summer from Everton, missed a few opportunities before scoring two goals within seven minutes during the second half of the match. This resulted in the Sky Blues comfortably securing a crucial victory, with Josh Eccles also scoring a goal.

The loss indicates that QPR has failed to win in their last nine games played at home. However, they were obstructed from taking the lead by a remarkable block from Ben Wilson, who prevented a header from Lyndon Dykes in the first half.

In the final minute of regular time, Kenneth Paal managed to net a goal for Rangers, but it only served as a small consolation.

During the summer, Simms was recruited by Coventry to take the place of last season's highest goal scorer, Viktor Gyokeres, who secured a transfer to Sporting Lisbon after scoring 24 goals in the 2022-23 season.

Simms has had a rather annoying beginning to his time at Coventry, not being able to make a goal in his first eight matches. In his most recent game, he almost made a goal from a difficult angle but missed. Additionally, he had two other opportunities to score, but was stopped by a defender and the opposing goalkeeper.

However, things took a turn for the better for him at the 56th minute as Jay Dasilva's free kick was directed towards the box by Luis Binks, giving the striker an opportune moment to effortlessly score.

Coventry has taken the lead in a game for the seventh time this season, but only managed to win once from those previous occasions.

The fans were a bit nervous about that statistic, but they didn't have to worry because Eccles' shot went in after it was deflected from Godden's shot which had bounced off a teammate and ended up at Eccles' feet.

The Rangers were out of luck as they're the sole team in the league to have two streaks of nine matches without a win at home since the previous season. During the game, referee Tom Nield didn't give them a penalty even though it appeared that Sinclair Armstrong was tackled by Wilson and fell down.

Simms ensured the lead by scoring from Jamie Allen's pass, while Paal lifted the spirits of the disheartened home crowd by converting Armstrong's delivery.

During his interview on BBC Radio London, Gareth Ainsworth, the manager of QPR, shared his thoughts.

The referees did a poor job for the Championship game. There was a goal scored while an opposing player was in an offside position and a penalty that was clearly evident. I spoke to the officials about these issues and they acknowledged their mistakes, though it doesn't rectify the outcome.

I'm really disappointed about my team's performance during that 20-minute period where they appeared to completely fall apart. Perhaps the disallowed goal was a major blow to their morale, but we were incredibly vulnerable at that point, allowing two counter-attacks - which is simply unacceptable.

Sinclair's penalty at 2-0 is undeniable and it helped us get back into the game and salvage a result.

"However, the scoreline reflects a 3-1 loss on home turf. As a football manager, I am aware of the standards expected of my team. The outcome alone is not satisfactory, and I anticipate the critics reveling in our defeat."

According to BBC CWR, the manager of Coventry, Mark Robins stated:

Securing a victory was absolutely crucial. When a winning streak is delayed, it could potentially cause damage to both the players' and fans' morale.

During the half-time break, we discussed what improvements we needed to make. As a result, we were able to identify open areas and actively involve Jamie Allen in the game, which led to our amazing goal from a perfectly executed pass into the goal area."

The object fell from the sky and landed at Simms' feet. He quickly reacted and seized the opportunity without any hesitation, resulting in a successful outcome.

"He didn't put in too much effort, but sometimes you might make hasty moves or attempt to control the ball, and find yourself faced with skilled defenders who can stop you."
