QPR boss Marti Cifuentes understands fans’ frustration after win over Oxford United
QPR's head coach, Marti Cifuentes, acknowledged the disappointment expressed by fans during the first half of his team's 2-0 victory over Oxford United on Wednesday.
After a remarkable 3-0 victory over Norwich City last weekend, supporters at Loftus Road witnessed a rough first half. However, Sam Field secured the win by scoring twice in the second half.
This win puts the Rangers four points ahead of the relegation zone in the Championship, prompting Cifuentes to urge everyone to maintain a sense of perspective.
He mentioned that there was a noticeable sense of frustration at halftime and throughout the first half.
"QPR is known for its exciting and dynamic style of play, which was a key factor in my decision to join the team."
I totally share the view that the first half wasn't very impressive, but I believe everyone recognizes the progress we've made.
"Just three weeks ago, the situation was quite different. Now, it’s only natural for fans to have high hopes. Everyone anticipates a victory against Bristol City this Saturday, and that's how it should be. However, I realize that it won't be an easy match."
"I'm confident that our fans will support us, just like they did a few weeks ago when we were struggling in the first half. They stood by us then, and I believe they'll continue to do so."
"It's a fundamental aspect of the game, and I'm dedicated to ensuring that we enhance our performances."
Reflecting on three weeks ago, anyone would have celebrated a win like this. However, it now feels like our performance in the first half wasn't up to par — and I agree, it really wasn't. That said, we must remain humble and recognize our current situation, especially considering the number of injured players we have.
“The truth is that we are without several important team members, and what these individuals are accomplishing is no small feat. Considering all the challenges we’ve faced, I really want to acknowledge the efforts of the players.”
The Rangers showed significant improvement in the second half after a disappointing beginning to the match, with Field emerging as the hero of the game.
The midfielder got the first goal by connecting with a Rayan Kolli header inside the penalty area. He then added another goal with a strong shot from just outside the box.
Cifuentes shared that during the break, he advised his players to stay calm and focused.
He mentioned that grasping the message that each player requires is crucial. "Every player is unique," he explained. "While some may thrive with a little encouragement, others may perform better with a supportive word or gesture."
It's natural to feel frustrated when things aren't going well in the first half, but throughout my career, I've realized that these moments call for more composure. Remaining calm is essential, as that's exactly what the players need from you.
"All the credit goes to the players. I wasn’t able to secure the second half or score any goals. It was the team that kicked off the second half on a strong note."
