Livermore double gives Watford victory at QPR
Ever since he signed up with Watford last year, Jake Livermore has managed to put three goals in the back of the net.
QPR's hope of not being relegated from the Championship decreased more as Watford scored two goals through Jake Livermore, leading them to win at Loftus Road.
The ex-player of Hull, West Brom, and the English national team scored two goals during the game. The first goal was a beautiful curling shot taken from a distance of 25 yards and it went past the goalkeeper, Asmir Begovic, at the one-hour mark. The second goal was made after a clearance from Matheus Martins' cross fell perfectly to him outside the box, allowing him to drill the ball into the net.
In the 34 years of his career, he has only managed to score multiple goals in a game twice. The first time was when he scored two goals for Hull against Rotherham in 2016.
While Sinclair Armstrong was a major force for Rangers, Lyndon Dykes was the one who scored to make a comeback, tapping in a pass from substitute Paul Smyth from a very short distance.
However, the opposing team was unable to score a tying goal, despite Jimmy Dunne's excellent attempt that was stopped by Ben Hamer. Unfortunately, this loss keeps our team in low ranking, close to the bottom of the leaderboard. On the other hand, Watford successfully moved up in the rankings, now holding the eighth position, and are just one point away from the play-off spots.
QPR got a lift as Ilias Chair, the playmaker, and Jack Colback, the midfielder, returned from their injuries. However, Watford had Ryan Porteous and Ismael Kone on the bench after they fell ill. When the two teams faced off in August last year, with Valerien Ismael in charge, Watford emerged victorious with a 4-0 win.
The team playing at home had a chance to score within the first five minutes of the game. Kenneth Paal passed the ball from the left and found Armstrong without any defenders nearby. However, the forward from Rangers has not scored in the league since August and was unable to aim his headshot towards the target.
The shooting opportunity for Martins was obstructed by Jake Clarke-Salter's sliding challenge when Giorgi Chakvetadze passed the ball to him. However, both Dykes and Rhys Healey had difficulty getting involved in the game, resulting in opportunities being rare.
Chair missed a free-kick that went over the bar after Livermore received a yellow card for forcefully pushing Reggie Cannon right on the edge of the box. In addition, Francisco Sierralta hit the bar with a header on the opposite side, but the goal would not have counted as he was deemed offside if it had gone in.
Before the break, Armstrong displayed his prowess by launching an angled shot that was not well-handled by Hamer. Chair almost scored when he tried to push the loose ball into the net, but Ryan Andrews made a remarkable tackle to stop him.
At the beginning of the second half, Watford almost got a surprise as they attempted to pass the ball between their four defenders. Armstrong managed to steal the ball from Sierralta and made Hamer jump into action to keep the ball out of the goal. However, Armstrong's attempt to control the ball failed, and he lost his chance to score as the agile Watford keeper swiftly blocked his shot.
Livermore scored two goals for the opposing team in just five minutes, which caused distress among the supporters of the home team. In the middle of these goals, Jack Colback was given the chance to even the score but missed the opportunity by side-footing wide.
Dykes eventually managed to score a goal despite Watford's ongoing struggle to keep a clean sheet for 12 games. However, this was not sufficient to prevent an eighth loss for Marti Cifuentes' team at their home ground.
The Rangers are aiming to break their seven-game losing streak in their upcoming game against Millwall on their home field next Saturday. Meanwhile, Watford will be hitting the road to take on Bristol City.
The manager of QPR, Marti Cifuentes, stated:
During the latter part of the game, we had two significant opportunities in the first minute, and subsequently, another one. Regrettably, they managed to gain the advantage by scoring with their initial shot towards our goalpost.
It's extremely annoying when we allow two goals from such a far distance as it doesn't normally happen.
We didn't quit, we attempted to push through, yet their goalkeeper delivered an extraordinary save. Ultimately, I would deem it a regrettable outcome but we must capitalize on our opportunities to score.
During the match, we faced one of the top teams in the league and we had control of the game. We had numerous significant opportunities to score. We must recuperate and perform better in the following matches.
Valerien Ismael, the coach for Watford, mentioned on BBC Three Counties Radio:
This is a challenging location to obtain the necessary points due to the proximity of the audience to the field. It is crucial to remain fully attentive and concentrate solely on completing your objectives.
During the initial portion of the match, we managed to dominate and exhibit exceptional football skills, however, our team failed to create any significant opportunities to score a goal.
We're really happy for Jake. He earned it, and he sets an excellent example for others, particularly the younger members of the team.
Even though there are many more games to come, it is crucial to keep communication going. Our team has another game away from home next week, and we anticipate it will be a difficult one. Nevertheless, the victory we achieved today will provide us with a boost of confidence.
