Prince Harry has spoken out to clarify the rumors circulating on the internet about him and Meghan Markle possibly getting a divorce.
Those who are observant have apparently realized that Harry and Markle haven't been appearing at public events together. Some are speculating that they might be experiencing a "professional separation" in an effort to revamp their individual images.
On Wednesday, Harry, 40, addressed the speculation at the 2024 DealBook Summit hosted by the New York Times in New York City.
His wife attended a glamorous event in Beverly Hills, walking the red carpet to pay tribute to her friend, filmmaker and producer Tyler Perry. Notably, Perry is also the godfather of their daughter, Lilibet, as reported by the New York Post.
Andrew Ross Sorkin, who established the DealBook Summit and writes for the New York Times, requested Harry to provide more details about what was going on in his life.
"I searched for you on Google News and found that people are constantly intrigued by everything you're up to. They're particularly interested in Meghan being in California while you're here," Sorkin remarked. "There are articles popping up everywhere asking questions like, 'Why are you hosting separate events? Why aren’t you collaborating more?'"
He made a playful comment about being in New York because Sorkin had invited him, unlike Markle. However, he then clarified that the recent speculation about their divorce is just the most recent chapter in a series of rumors concerning him and his wife.
"It seems like we've purchased or relocated to a new home around 10 or 12 times. We've also likely gone through divorce about 10 or 12 times too. So it's just like, what?" Harry chuckled.
He mentioned that it didn't really upset him, but he felt sorry for the "trolls" who make and share the gossip.
"It’s tough to stay updated, which is why many choose to overlook it. I really feel for the trolls," he mentioned. "They build up their expectations so much, thinking, 'Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes,' and then it all falls apart. I truly feel sorry for them."
The prince foresaw that any conversation with Sorkin could be misinterpreted and turned into ammunition by his opponents in the media and among the public. To preemptively address this, he offered an apology to the columnist.
"I can only say I'm sorry for that, but you were the one who invited me, so it's not really my responsibility," Harry said.
Harry later mentioned that he and Markle have been concentrating on their efforts with the Archewell Foundation and various philanthropic projects. He expressed his commitment to being the "best husband and father possible."
