Preston North End 0-0 Sunderland: Championship leaders held at Deepdale
Preston managed to secure a 0-0 stalemate against Sunderland, who are currently leading the table in the Sky Bet Championship.
North End manager Paul Heckingbottom might have settled for a draw before the match started, but his team deserved better after failing to capitalize on several solid chances.
Regis Le Bris unexpectedly chose to rest both Patrick Roberts and Romaine Mundle as part of his strategy to rotate players, and it seemed like his team struggled to find their rhythm throughout the match.
Just two minutes in, it seemed like Sam Greenwood was poised to score from just a few feet away after some fantastic setup by Jordan Storey. However, Greenwood mishit his shot, sending it across the goal to Kaine Kesler-Hayden, who also missed an easy opportunity to convert.
Shortly after, Chris Mepham was almost in trouble when he brought down Greenwood near the penalty area while he was about to break free towards the goal. However, the Sunderland defender managed to escape with just a yellow card due to the close call.

The Black Cats were nearly trailing by a goal and facing a player disadvantage within the first 10 minutes. However, they issued a warning shortly after when Wilson Isidor hit the side netting from the edge of the penalty area, thanks to an excellent cross-field pass from Chris Rigg.
Even though they have only secured one victory in their last five league matches, Preston appeared to be the much stronger team.
In the 17th minute, Mads Frokjaer, who was unmarked, missed a close header from Greenwood's cross, sending it wide from a great spot. Just three minutes later, Brad Potts also missed an opportunity at the back post, failing to capitalize on Liam Lindsay's high cross.
At the 30-minute mark, Storey had no trouble finding the back of the net for the home team. However, his powerful shot from close range was brilliantly defended by the courageous Luke O'Nien, who managed to block it.
The Black Cats struggled throughout the match but nearly took the lead just five minutes later when Aaron Connolly forced Freddie Woodman into a fantastic save after connecting with Trai Hume's inviting cross.
North End maintained their dominance in the first half, and Riis prompted a fantastic save from Simon Moore with a bending shot from 20 yards out.
Although Sunderland began the second half on a stronger note, Le Bris didn't rely on Roberts and Mundle from the bench until the 62nd minute.
The second period was rather uneventful, but just before the end, Mundle and Roberts made a connection. Roberts unleashed a powerful volley that required Woodman to make an important low save.
"We've been playing great, but right now, we're facing some challenges. In the first half, we had three solid opportunities that could have put us in a much better position. Additionally, some of the referee's calls could have helped ease our situation a bit."
"Even though we haven't received much support from the officials, with five controversial calls in the last eight matches, it certainly complicates things. However, we still had the opportunity to perform better in this game and earlier ones to secure more points."
"We have a unique identity and a distinct style, which forces others to adapt and maintain strict discipline in their performance if they want to compete with us effectively."
"I appreciate the compliment, but it also means we can always expect to face a team that is well-prepared."

We're not satisfied with how we performed today, as it wasn't what we had aimed for, but at least we managed to secure a point.
"The season is lengthy, and we have numerous matches each week. It's essential for us to handle the team and the roster effectively, providing chances for other players, as we will definitely rely on them down the line."
"We also need to take care of the team, as they might become fatigued. It's important for us to keep them in top condition."
"We understand that we really miss Roberts, as he's a significant asset to the team. However, it was anticipated that the final 30 minutes would be more suited for him, and I believe we altered the flow of the match at that point."
