Nemanja Matic fires warning to Manchester United Premier League title rivals

Man Utd are three points clear at the top of the Premier League after a 1-0 win at Burnley that Nemanja Matic felt was significant.

Nemanja Matic has warned Liverpool and Manchester City that his side have shown they have what it takes to win the title this season after a hard-fought win at Burnley.

United moved three points clear of Liverpool ahead of Sunday's Anfield showdown with a 1-0 win at Turf Moor thanks to Paul Pogba's second-half volley and Matic hailed it as a crucial victory.

The Clarets turned the contest into a battle in the first half, with United also unfortunate to see a Harry Maguire header disallowed.

But they kept their patience and composure to take control of the game after the break and deserved the win which made it nine wins from 11 unbeaten Premier League fixtures.

And Matic felt it was exactly the kind of game that showcased United's title credentials and how they've improved in recent months.

“This kind of win shows we’re ready to compete for the title," the midfielder told MUTV."Sometimes we look like a team that wants to score as soon as possible and we panic, today we showed more maturity, we were clever.

"It’s always hard here. Not to concede a goal from long balls, set pieces, we prepared the game well and we deserve the three points."

United were much the better side in the second half and Matic felt it was an example of his side knowing they have the quality on the pitch to hurt opponents at any moment.

“We have a lot of quality, in this kind of games we need to use that, we have to be patient, when you have that much quality in 90 minutes one situation will decide and that is exactly what we did today," he said.

United now head to Anfield on Sunday knowing victory would take them six points clear of the defending champions, but Matic believes they've already shown that their rise to the top of the table this season is no fluke.

“Sunday is the biggest derby in England, we go there to compete with them and see where we are against one of the best teams in England, but we're ready," he said.

“We’ve played 17 games, we’re top of the table, that shows something, it’s not five or six games, after 17 games it’s definitely not lucky, there is a quality but we can’t relax, we have to concentrate until the end and go game by game. The next one is always the biggest final.”
