‘We are fragile defensively’: Pep Guardiola admits title hopes are fading
Pep Guardiola has admitted that losing at Anfield next Sunday might jeopardize Manchester City's chances of keeping their title.
If Liverpool wins against Southampton this Sunday, they will extend their lead over the champions to eight points. This would then set up the possibility of a 11-point advantage over City if they secure a win at home the following week.
Following Tottenham's victory, which marked City's fifth consecutive loss, the manager was questioned about whether the gap could be recovered. "Definitely, especially with Liverpool on a winning streak," Guardiola responded.
When asked if this could spell the end for their title defense, he replied, "I’m not sure. However, we aren’t focusing on winning or losing the championship right now. We're not prepared to consider what the outcome will be at the end of the season."
“In the end, if we don’t secure the title, it’s a sign that we simply haven’t earned it. In the past, our victories were a reflection of our hard work and merit. Right now, our main focus is on Feyenoord this Tuesday. That's our priority - it’s crucial for our Champions League qualification. As we go along, the players will continue to improve.”
James Maddison scored two goals, while Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson each added one, leading to City suffering their first loss at home in regular time in 52 games. This also marked their heaviest home defeat since they fell 5-1 to Arsenal in 2003.
Guardiola mentioned, "At this point, our defense is vulnerable. We began strongly, just like we usually do, but we failed to find the back of the net. Then, we ended up allowing a goal, and after that, more followed, which is tough for our morale at the moment."
"In the last eight years, we've never experienced anything like this. It's important for us to face it head-on and turn it around by winning the upcoming matches, particularly the next one. Our perspective is one way right now, but it could change in a few weeks."
Guardiola shared his thoughts on the team's feelings. "They’re frustrated with their performance, but sometimes the other team plays really well, and occasionally we just don’t meet the mark in certain areas," he explained. "One mistake would be over-analyzing past performances, and another would be making too many changes after eight years. We need to focus on the basics that we fully trust. I believe that step by step, the players will regain their form, and we’ll get back to trying to win matches. If we don’t succeed in the end, what can we do? I remain hopeful, and since I tend to be quite optimistic, I hope the team can share that outlook as well."
Ange Postecoglou expressed his happiness with how his team bounced back after their recent home defeat to Ipswich. “Following a tough loss last time, we returned to what we fundamentally believe in. I have to give credit to the players; they were fantastic,” said the Tottenham manager. “We faced some challenges early on but eventually found our rhythm in the match. I’m really proud of the players for sticking to our style of play.”
