Paul Heaton, the iconic figure from Beautiful South and the Housemartins, believes that for artists to have a say in ticket pricing, they must take a more hands-on approach throughout the entire process.

While it's not a new concept, dynamic pricing grabbed attention worldwide in late August when tickets for Oasis' reunion tour, which were highly sought after, saw their prices more than double on Ticketmaster as soon as they became available for purchase.

Amid backlash from politicians and consumer rights organizations targeting Oasis and Ticketmaster, the band later released a statement claiming they were unaware that dynamic pricing would be implemented.

Liam Gallagher, showing no remorse, responded to a fan on social media who criticized the dynamic pricing by telling them to "be quiet."

The pricing structure was abandoned for Oasis' two concerts at Wembley Stadium in late September, as well as for all the international dates they announced afterward.

Earlier this week, Paul Heaton revealed plans for a major homecoming concert at Bramall Lane stadium, the cherished home ground of Sheffield United, scheduled for May 2025.

Similar to his mostly sold-out shows for 2024, all tickets for the Bramall Lane concert are priced under £40, which is a bargain compared to the ticket prices of many other artists performing in stadiums.

This morning, October 10th, Heaton was featured on BBC Breakfast to discuss the Sheffield concert. He emphasized that artists should take a more active role in influencing ticket pricing.

“While I’m not pointing fingers at other artists, I believe that if you want to have a say in things, you need to be present at the meeting,” he stated.

"The discussions regarding ticket pricing, the true cost involved, and whether there will be variable pricing."

“I’m involved in those meetings. The promoter is present, my manager is there, and I’m also in attendance.”

Clearly, I advocate for myself and my fellow musicians, but I can't help but notice that fans seem to be overlooked. Whenever I attend these events, I find myself considering whether the people I know would be able to afford tickets.

Heaton went on to say, "I frequently advocate for lower prices, while the promoter tends to push for a higher amount."

It's true for everything in life. If you want to secure a great opportunity for your supporters, you need to be present and involved.

The same goes for T-shirts sold at concerts. I ensure that their price isn’t sky-high, like £70 or £80. To achieve that, you need to be present at the meeting.

He wrapped up by saying, “I’m not blaming anyone, but the more you participate in these kinds of activities, the better your chances of keeping costs low.”

Tickets for Paul Heaton's concert at Sheffield's Bramall Lane, featuring Shed Seven and The Lightning Seeds, will be available for purchase through Absolute Radio Tickets starting at 9:30 AM on Friday, October 11th.
