With the early access launch of Path of Exile 2 approaching, developer Grinding Gear Games has revealed that sales have surged to such an extent that they are already concerned about potential wait times, even after thorough preparations. As the eagerly awaited follow-up to one of the top RPGs on PC, the game is set to take advantage of the massive interest in the genre following the release of Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred, and it seems likely to succeed in this endeavor.
In a recent video, game director Jonathan Rogers announced that we have just surpassed one million redemptions for Path of Exile 2 keys, with sales continuing to rise. When the game officially launches, it will be available for free on Steam, but those who want to access it in early release will need to purchase at least the $30 pack of microtransaction points for the in-game store. “This is certainly exciting news,” Rogers noted, “but it also brings some challenges.” GGG had previously stated that they had prepared enough servers for Path of Exile 2 to support up to a million players, but it seems we may need to accommodate even more.
Rogers notes that there will likely be some waiting lines during the launch weekend. Usually, when a new league of Path of Exile begins, there are initial queues, but they usually dissipate quickly as players join in. "When we were preparing for the launch and planning for server capacity, we honestly didn't anticipate having over a million players online simultaneously."
Rogers mentioned that the team has placed an order for additional server capacity, which will be available shortly. However, he does have some worries regarding the game's backend systems. "To be honest, we're uncertain about how well our backend services can manage the increased demand once we exceed a million players." Last night, the PoE 2 website experienced some downtime due to the high volume of players excited for the upcoming launch.
Rogers wraps up by expressing surprise at the scale of the response during EA, saying, “We didn’t anticipate it would get this big. I really want to extend my gratitude to all of you for supporting this project. If we encounter any server problems at launch, please rest assured that we will do everything possible to address them.”
As the release of Path of Exile 2 is only a few hours away as I write this, we can only wait to see how things unfold. Regardless, it seems that Grinding Gear Games might be onto something special with this one.
