Outer Banks stars react to shocking death of beloved character on season finale
The cast of Outer Banks has responded to the surprising demise of a key character in the second half of season four.
Viewers were furious when their favorite character was unexpectedly killed in the season finale of the popular Netflix series that was released this week.
Currently, one of the top actresses from the series has described the beloved character who has passed away as 'the soul of Outer Banks.'
A prominent actor from the show expressed that he would always be thankful for the time he spent collaborating with the star who has recently departed from the series.
The actor portraying the character who is killed revealed in a behind-the-scenes video for Netflix that when he read his death scene, he "got it."
Last week, the cast of Outer Banks, including Austin North, Fiona Palomo, Madelyn Cline, Chase Stokes, Madison Bailey, Drew Starkey, Carlacia Grant, Jonathan Davies, and Rudy Pankow, were spotted together.
Viewers of the series were heartbroken when JJ Maybank, played by Rudy Pankow, passed away in the embrace of his girlfriend Kiara, portrayed by Madison Bailey.
JJ was tragically killed by his own father, Chandler Groff (portrayed by J. Anthony Crane), in Morocco after he brandished a knife at Kiara (Madison Bailey) and attempted to steal their treasure.
In a frantic effort to rescue his girlfriend, the Pogue made a heartfelt plea to his father for the crown. Despite this act of sacrifice, he still ended up with a slash to his stomach.
In his last moments, JJ looked at Kiara and said, "Look after everyone else. I love you, Kie."
Rudy explained, "When I learned that JJ was willing to take such a huge risk, even though it might lead to his downfall, it made sense to me. The audition description mentioned that the character is 'loyal to a fault.' As the situation became more intense, it became clear that JJ's main priority is to take those risks for the sake of his friends, putting them ahead of his own safety."
The actor added, "He has to assess every moment of his life to see if it's meaningful, and I believe the answer is always a resounding 'Yes.' Life is incredibly valuable and delicate, and his passing raises important questions about the future of OBX. When someone so close to you is no longer there, how do you find your way through that?"
Madison Bailey, who portrays Kiara, shared that JJ represents the essence of perseverance and challenges the norms to protect what truly counts.
At the same time, Kelsea Ballerini's partner, Chase Stokes, who portrays JJ's close friend John B, expressed his views on the relationship between their characters.
A beloved character from Outer Banks, JJ Maybank, portrayed by Rudy Pankow, has been written out of the show.
JJ, portrayed by Rudy Pankow, tragically passed away from his injuries after being stabbed by his father.
He breathed his final breaths while being with his girlfriend, Kiara.
The cast members have shared their thoughts on the unexpected death of a key character in the second half of season four. Pictured are Chase, Jonathan, Madelyn, and Rudy.
Chase remarked, "The bond between John and JJ exemplifies the real essence of friendship. It’s not only about celebrating the good times together; it’s also about supporting each other through tough moments and ensuring we keep one another in check."
"I will always be thankful for the time I've spent with Rudy; it has truly been a delightful part of filming the show," he mentioned.
Madelyn Cline, the show's main actress, praised JJ by calling him 'the soul of Outer Banks,' expressing her admiration by saying, 'He brings such unpredictability, and that’s something we all appreciate.'
A collection of moments from JJ's life and cherished experiences with the rest of the Pogues unfolded, featuring an emotional homage from Chase Stokes' character, John B.
"Everyone you care about will eventually pass away," he said. "Your parents, your closest friends, and even those you hold dear."
He went on to say, "I believe it’s less about the number of years you have and more about how you choose to spend them."
And JJ wrapped it all up. Two decades of experiences and memories all condensed into that time.
John B remarked, "It was a mix of adventure and romance. There were some challenges along the way, which were also significant. It involved making sacrifices and building friendships."
At the same time, Kelsea Ballerini's boyfriend, Chase Stokes (on the left), who portrays JJ's best friend John B (on the right), expressed his views on the relationship between the characters.
Madelyn Cline, the star of the show, praised JJ by calling him 'the heart of Outer Banks,' saying, 'He has such an unpredictable nature, and that's something we all adore.'
If there was one thing JJ excelled at, it was being a true friend. He kept us united and was the most incredible friend we could have asked for.
Fans were heartbroken by JJ's sudden and unforeseen demise, expressing their frustration about the character's 'terrible conclusion' on social media.
On X, someone expressed their feelings, saying: "JJ Maybank, you will always be cherished. You’re the people's favorite. I regret that we couldn't shield you from the drama involving the actors, writers, and the cast. Outer Banks wouldn't be the same without you."
"JJ Maybank is returning; it can't conclude this way," another person expressed.
One person expressed, "I really have to stop getting emotionally invested in characters who go through so much pain. They never experience a happy ending. JJ didn't have a single moment of peace in all four seasons of Outer Banks, and now his last scene is everywhere online. I'm feeling so hurt and devastated."
Echoing a similar idea, another person commented, "The Outer Banks wouldn't be the same without JJ."
"You can't have The Pogues without one of the band members, just like you can't have Season 5 without JJ. It leaves a major gap in the story, all due to the personal issues among the actors."
"Apologies, but it's simply impossible to imagine Outer Banks without JJ Maybank," shared a fifth commenter.
Drew, Chase, Madison, Carlacia, Austin, Rudy, Madelyn, and Jonathan are seen at the premiere of the show's fourth season in Charleston on October 8.
A sixth person chimed in, saying, "Removing everyone's favorite character? Who made that call? The ending is terrible; it just won't feel right without JJ."
JJ's sudden passing occurred just a few days after Netflix revealed that it would be bringing Outer Banks back for a fifth and concluding season.
On Monday, the creators and executive producers Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke released a newsletter titled Dispatch to all Pogues, announcing the latest update.
In their announcement, the three of them mentioned that they were inspired to create the series after they stumbled upon a photo of young people on a beach at twilight during a blackout in 2017.
"Seven years ago, it felt like there was no way we could actually tell the complete story over five seasons. Yet, here we are, nearing the end of our fourth season and still going strong," they wrote.
In another section of the message, it mentioned: "As we move on from Season Four, we feel a mix of sadness and excitement. We're now looking forward to Season Five, where we aim to bring our cherished Pogues back in the way we envisioned and planned many years ago."
The letter went on to say, "The fourth season was both our longest and most challenging to create, but it was also the most fulfilling.”
The season wraps up with a full-length episode that we believe is our strongest and most impactful one yet. We really hope you feel that way too!
In wrapping up their announcement, they expressed: "Season Five will be our final season, and we believe it will be our greatest one yet. We invite you to join us for one last ride to the surf spot."
