Olympics

The 2024 Olympics in Paris have kicked off with a spectacular opening ceremony by the River Seine.

Although the sights are great, the athletes are not here to sightsee. They are fully focused on their upcoming events.

Today is a significant Saturday as BBC Sport NI examines which Northern Irish athletes will begin their quest for a medal on the first day of competition.

A world champion will begin the competitions on Saturday when Hannah Scott begins her races for Team Great Britain in the quadruple sculls event at 11:50.

At the start of the event, Banbridge's Philip Doyle will be rowing on the water with his Team Ireland teammate Daire Lynch in the men's double sculls at 10:30.

On the first day, fans will get to watch Rhys McClenaghan, a two-time world champion, as he begins his quest for Olympic success in the qualifying round of the pommel horse during the evening session at 7:00 PM.

At the pool, keep an eye out for 16-year-old Grace Davison from Bangor as she competes for Team Ireland in the women's 4x100m freestyle relay heats at 11:15. The final will also be held on the same day.

Following their performance before the opening ceremony, the Ireland men's Rugby Sevens team will not be competing for a medal. However, they will be facing off against the USA at 2:00 PM to determine their final ranking.

Both the United Kingdom team, led by David Ames, and Ireland begin their hockey group stage games. The UK will play against Spain at 9:00, while Ireland will take on Belgium at 9:30.

Today marks the beginning of the equestrian competition, and Susie Berry will be representing Team Ireland in the eventing dressage starting at 08:30.
