Olivia Dean Glastonbury 2024 Interview

Olivia Dean

"I'm not a fan of sticking to one specific style," claims British vocalist Olivia Dean, slated to perform at Glastonbury on June 28. Her first album, Messy, released in 2023, earned nominations for the Brit Awards and the Mercury Prize, marking a significant milestone in her career. "It was the point where I felt like I had made it. It showed everyone that I have true talent."

When we gather in Los Angeles, the person experiencing Coachella for the first time has recently arrived from a show in Rio de Janeiro and will soon return home to London before going to the yearly Trinidad and Tobago Carnival. "I'm not even sure what time zone I'm in," Dean says with a laugh. Her air miles will keep adding up as she takes the main stage during a tour in Europe later this spring.

Ahead, a couple of facts you might not be aware of about Dean:

Don't count on her replying to messages. When she's traveling, Dean confesses that she's not good at staying on top of her direct messages - she prefers to live in the present moment. "Everything is happening at once and it's amazing, but it also means I can only focus on the present day," she explains. "I miss the simplicity of the past when people just had landlines."

The singer's ultimate goal used to be performing at Glastonbury. She achieved this in 2023, and getting to meet Elton John was the perfect ending. "After my performance, I hopped in a golf cart and they took me to the main stage [to meet Elton]," she recalls. "I asked him, 'Are you feeling nervous for your performance?' And he replied, 'Not really.' It was like something out of a movie."

Listed on her list of preferred snacks are chocolate-covered raisins, Pink Panther wafer cookies, and sliced ham.

After the show, the performer likes to quickly drink beer and avoid watching videos of herself that people share online. She believes it's unhealthy for the mind to perform and then immediately see everyone's reactions.
