Ten Hag outlines importance of winning trophies for Man Utd

Manchester United have Nottingham Forest standing in between them and a Carabao Cup final.

The Red Devils haven't won a trophy since 2017 but Erik ten Hag is hunting silverware in his first season at Old Trafford. United's route to the last four has been largely routine and they will now take on the Premier League new boys, who recently lost in Manchester.

United won this tournament six years ago under Jose Mourinho, beating Southampton in the final at Wembley. They will travel to the City Ground in the first-leg before hosting Steve Cooper's side next week. Ten Hag is confident that his side will relish the atmosphere in Nottingham as he underlined the need to win a trophy.

He said: "It's about that, it's about winning trophies. We have a good opportunity, but we have to go from game to game. So now we play Forest, two legs, so focus on the first leg and don't think further ahead because that will distract. So, the only aim for tomorrow is win that game."

United recently welcomed Jadon Sancho back to training at Carrington, but Ten Hag has confirmed he will not be available for the clash. Anthony Martial and Diogo Dalot are also not ready to return.

Forest themselves have an impressive history in this tournament, much of it coming during Brian Clough's legendary tenure. They've claimed four victories - the last coming in 1990 - and have been able to switch off from league matters having seen off the likes of Tottenham to make the last four.

Man Utd beat Nottingham Forest 3-0 last month

Cooper is already relishing the challenge that lies ahead, with his side firmly the underdogs. He said: "It's going to be a tough couple of games, we're only focused on the first leg at the moment so we have to commit to it and back ourselves otherwise it'll be even more difficult.

"We need to recognise that these games might not come around too often and we've had to work hard to get here. We look forward to it, embrace it and attack it but in our way."
