Nottingham Forest vs Manchester United LIVE Carabao Cup updates, early team news and Rashford latest

Manchester United will visit the City Ground for the first time in over two decades in the League Cup semi-final on Wednesday night.

United were defeated 3-2 against Arsenal at the weekend, but Erik ten Hag has insisted that performance has been 'left behind' in preparation for the first leg of the League Cup against Nottingham Forest, who have improved in recent weeks.

Ten Hag said at his pre-match press conference: "We left it behind [Arsenal defeat] and we said the right conclusions then we have to move forward and quickly because tomorrow is a big game and focus on that."

Regarding the early team news, Casemiro is set to return to the side after serving a one-match suspension in the Premier League, which forced him to stay in Manchester while his teammates played at the Emirates on Sunday.

Diogo Dalot and Anthony Martial are unavailable through injury while the game has also come too soon for Jadon Sancho.

The second leg will be played at Old Trafford on February 1 and that could decide which side progresses to Wembley.

United look to be on the right track

This is United’s sixth semi-final in the last four seasons but they’ve been the bridesmaids far too often in that time. In fact, given they’ve only reached one final in that time, they might be more flower girls than bridesmaids, but there is confidence times are changing now. United badly needed a trophy under Solskjaer. This team doesn’t need silverware in the same way. Ten Has has built a squad packed with experience of winning and United look to be on the right track. They don’t need a trophy to confirm those suspicions, but it’s always nice to have one anyway. Proving those semi-final hiccups belong to a different team by confidently and clinically dispatching Nottingham Forest would be a good start.

Ten Hag on winning trophies

United have an excellent chance of winning the Carabao Cup.

Ten Hag said: "It's the best feeling you can have, winning a trophy and I have the luck in my career to win some trophies and it's magnificent, especially for the fans, it's so great and I think the fans here have some experience, especially the older ones, but in this period, Manchester United didn't win trophies and it's too long ago. We are aware of that fact and we have to do it again."

A huge match for Forest tonight

This is an atmospheric part of an excellent city and the walk from the car park took us right past Trent Bridge before crossing the road to the City Ground and the banks of the Trent. I last came for work purposes on October 2014 and eight-and-a-half years later the press room still isn’t actually inside the stadium, which is probably an indication of the lack of space they are working with. There are plans afoot to try and increase the capacity here and they do feel like a welcome addition to the Premier League. A couple of shops had red and white balloons tied outside on the way to the stadium and it certainly feels like a big night for them.

This is a unique area of the country

This is a unique area of the country, with three stadiums cobbled closely together. It’s like a mini Melbourne. One road separates the main entrance to the City Ground from Trent Bridge, which hosted Kent’s magnificent victory over Lancashire in the Royal London One-Day Cup final in September. It’s a tremendous little area and the City Ground is unique in that it backs onto the Trent.

United have not been here since February 1999 and everyone knows what happened that day. If they didn’t, there have been ample reminders of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s four-goal spree in the last few days.

Ten Hag makes admission over Martial role

Erik ten Hag insists United play their "best football" with Anthony Martial in the starting XI.

Martial has missed a combined 14 weeks of the season through four separate injuries and is yet to complete 90 minutes.

The 27-year-old has been already ruled out of United's League Cup semi-final first leg tie with Nottingham Forest, the 18th game out of 31 he will be absent from.

United have announced three fixture changes affecting their Premier League schedule in March.

What Ten Hag has told players ahead of Forest game

Erik ten Hag doubled down on his criticism of United's defending for Arsenal's goals in their 3-2 defeat.

Ten Hag was highly critical of the manner that United allowed Eddie Nketiah to score twice and Bukayo Saka to fire Arsenal ahead in the immediate aftermath of the contest at the Emirates Stadium.

United have two cup games against Nottingham Forest and Reading this week to reset after dropping five points at Arsenal and Crystal Palace last week.

United give team news for Nottingham Forest

United will still be without three senior players for their League Cup semi-final first leg with Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.

Diogo Dalot has missed the last three matches with a muscular injury, Anthony Martial was absent for the draw with Crystal Palace and defeat to Arsenal last week, while Jadon Sancho has not played since the draw with Chelsea on October 22.

Sancho resumed squad training last week and United host Championship side Reading in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday but the winger will not be involved at Forest.
