The skies over Norfolk have been illuminated by the Northern Lights in stunning shades of red and magenta.

Richard Rawling took photos of the aurora with his mobile phone camera in Hingham, right after 7:00 PM according to Greenwich Mean Time.

Even though he had witnessed the stunning display in Norway, he expressed utter astonishment upon seeing it from his own backyard.

The illumination occurs due to the interplay between the solar wind, which is a flow of electrically charged particles emanating from the Sun, and the atmosphere around the Earth.

There are individuals, such as Mr. Rawling, who have a strong interest in observing the Northern Lights and utilize an application to receive notifications informing them of the likelihood of witnessing this phenomenon.

He mentioned that the aurora app indicated that it was possible to see it and he suggested that we check towards the northern direction.

We witnessed the illuminations in Norway and Finland, however observing the crimson sky from our rear yard was mind-blowing. I couldn't imagine it was happening.

The picture was borrowed from Richard Rawling's collection.

Mr. Rawling utilized his intelligent device to document the remarkable event.

The weather expert, Dan Holley, who works for Weatherquest and appears on the BBC, shared a message on a social media platform called X (previously known as Twitter). He informed his followers to take a look at the northern sky, as they may see the Aurora phenomenon visible even before it's completely dark outside.

Many followed his suggestion and uploaded their pictures onto the BBC Weather Watchers webpage.

The picture was taken by a user of the BBC Weather Watchers platform who goes by the name Lost In Norfolk.

Lost In Norfolk captured this image in Stow Bedon.
