Noddy Holder gives cancer update after being given months to live

Noddy Holder, the renowned singer known for his Christmas music, has recently shared an update about his health after doctors informed him that he might only have a few months left. The 78-year-old frontman of Slade revealed that medical professionals continue to monitor his condition closely following his cancer diagnosis five years ago.

Noddy, known for his 1973 song "Merry Xmas Everybody," shared with Sky News, "I was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer five years ago, and they are still monitoring my condition. Right now, I'm doing well, especially considering that back then I was given just six months to live."

"I've managed to get through it," Noddy mentioned. He had previously expressed that he felt more concern for his family upon receiving the news that he only had a few months left to live. He was started on a new type of chemotherapy that had yet to be tested on anyone older than 60.

When discussing his response to the diagnosis, the musician shared, “Honestly, I was more concerned about how my family would take the news than about myself. Eventually, I visited The Christie hospital in Manchester and asked, ‘So, is it six months? Is this really the end of the road?’”

"They told me, 'The only choice available is an experimental treatment that we've never used before. We’ve had some positive results with it in the last year, but we haven’t tested it on anyone over 60 yet,' which made the situation quite challenging."

He mentioned, "Your optimistic attitude and mindset might be beneficial for you. Are you open to trying this?" I responded, "Honestly, what other option do I have?... So I gave it a shot. It was tough, really tough, but here I am five years later, still going strong."

Holder revealed that he kept his cancer treatment hidden for five years because he “didn’t want the spotlight.” He explained, “I preferred to handle it on my own terms.”

Mrs. Holder shared the musician's diagnosis in an article for Cheshire Life magazine, noting that he managed to face it all with incredible optimism and remarkable courage. She explained how she truly experienced what it means to feel restless and anxious during their visits to the doctor's office.

"I remember a specific moment when I was attempting to leave the room, almost in a dramatic way," she recalled. "It was surreal. I completely broke down. I managed to step outside to gather myself, but unfortunately, you (Holder) were aware of what was really going on."

"I gathered my strength as fast as I could, and I’ve been there for him at every appointment he’s ever had. Clearly, we’ve faced it all together."

She mentioned, “There have been countless instances in small, windowless rooms where people just shake their heads and say, ‘I’m really sorry, but there’s nothing we can do.’ That’s what we were told. So, to see him here five years later is amazing. This isn't where we expected to be, but it’s fantastic.”

Until 1992, Holder, who was born in Walsall, was the lead singer of the rock band Slade, famous for hits like "Merry Xmas Everybody," "My Oh My," and "Far Far Away."
