Pearson began his football career in 1982 playing for his hometown club Nottingham Forest. He played as a central defender for several teams in his 20s and 30s, including Shrewsbury Town, Sheffield Wednesday, and Middlesbrough.

As a manager, Pearson had a successful career, managing several teams such as Leicester City, Derby County, and Watford. His greatest achievement was securing Leicester City's promotion to the Premier League in the 2013-2014 season and then leading them to become the Premier League champions in 2015-2016, a remarkable accomplishment that shocked the football world.
