Nigel Bates returns to EastEnders for first time in 26 years
Nigel Bates has made his comeback to EastEnders after a 26-year absence, appearing in the soap's Christmas Eve episode.
In Tuesday's episode, Paul Bradley's character was spotted at the community center, where Yolande Trueman, portrayed by Angela Wynter, was lending a hand as a volunteer.
Nigel exited the BBC soap in April 1998, as he and his adopted daughter Clare (played by Gemma Bissix) departed from Albert Square to embark on a new journey in Scotland with his partner Julie Haye (portrayed by Karen Henthorn) and her son Josh Saunders (who was played by Jon Lee).

According to the BBC, Nigel will be reconnecting with his childhood best friend Phil Mitchell, played by Steve McFadden, on Christmas Day.
Bradley, 69, expressed his excitement and gratitude by saying, “I’m excited and privileged to reprise my role as Nigel.”
Even though it was quite a while back, people still recognize me as Nigel when I'm out and about.
"It's been wonderful to come back, as I recognize so many people at EastEnders, and they're all really welcoming."
"I'm thrilled to be collaborating with Steve McFadden once more. I've always respected his talent, and he truly raises the standard. I'm enjoying this experience a lot."
In his initial stint on the show, his character experienced some major plot points, including a romantic relationship with Debbie Tyler, a staff member at the video store, played by Nicola Duffett. Tragically, Debbie's character met her end in a hit-and-run incident. Additionally, he developed a bond with Dot Cotton, who viewed him as the son she always wished she had.
During their time at school, Nigel had a close friendship with Phil and his brother, Grant (played by Ross Kemp).
Chris Clenshaw, the executive producer of EastEnders, expressed his excitement about bringing back Paul Bradley to reprise his role as Nigel Bates, a character that has a special place in the hearts of dedicated fans of the show.
Nigel's circumstances are surrounded by a lot of uncertainty, and the reasons for his solitary presence will be uncovered in the weeks ahead.
"This Christmas, Phil is in more need of support than ever, so we’re thrilled to bring these two old friends back together."
