How Naomi Campbell proved all her haters wrong – including me
Back in 1999, I was assigned to conduct an interview with Naomi Campbell. To my displeasure, she wasn't particularly welcoming. Even after all these years, I still remember her as one of the most challenging individuals I've ever had to interview. Looking back, I now have a greater understanding of the reasoning behind her demeanor.
Despite my 20 years of working in the fashion industry, it wasn't until I watched The Super Models documentary last year that I truly grasped the obstacles that Campbell has had to overcome. This realization came as a result of my privileged perspective as a white woman. The four-part series clearly illuminated the fact that despite all four models reaching the top of their field, they were not on equal footing. There were vast differences in their financial status, health, and personal lives, but one stood out in particular - the lifelong battle against systemic racism that Campbell has had to endure.
In life, everyone doesn't get the same opportunity even if they are equally worthy. Even if you're a top model, you can face tough times. At this point, you have to decide to get affected by it or make the best out of it.
