The First ‘Minecraft’ Movie Trailer Is Here, And It Is Horrifying

Minecraft Movie

Warner Bros. has just dropped the initial preview for the Minecraft film, featuring big names such as Jack Black and Jason Momoa. The one-minute clip for the movie based on the beloved game is...extremely frightening from every angle.

Feel free to check out the video below and see for yourself what I'm talking about.

The first thing that stands out is Jason Momoa's haircut, it definitely makes a statement. The second thing that catches your eye is the intense use of green screen CGI. It's understandable why they needed it, considering they have live action characters in a Minecraft-like world. But the question remains, why mix live action and a Minecraft world?

I had expected the Minecraft movie to be in a style similar to the game, but instead it features strange CGI cubes and regular people, not just actors voicing characters. Jack Black appears in the movie looking like himself, not a character from the game. Jason Momoa, on the other hand, agreed to wear a silly wig for his role.

Jack Black is playing the role of himself in the movie.

I know I may not be the intended audience for this film, but I believe it doesn't have to be high-quality to be successful at the box office, which I predict it will be. In my opinion, there are ways to adapt popular kids games well in live action, like Five Nights at Freddy's, or capture specific styles accurately, like the LEGO movies. A Minecraft movie should have been made to resemble the game more closely, or at least in a style more reminiscent of Minecraft.

The visuals in this movie are really bad. The way they combined animals and enemies, and the live-action actors placed on flat backgrounds, it’s just not good. I can only hope that by the time this movie is released in April 2025, the visuals will be better. Right now, the trailer is actually making the Borderlands movie look decent. But regardless, this movie is going to make a lot of money, so I guess it doesn’t really matter.

It's unfortunate because there have been many successful movies based on popular video games aimed at a younger audience, such as Sonic and Mario. However, if this upcoming movie is as disappointing as it appears to be, it could end that winning streak abruptly.
