A new documentary about Mike Tyson's matchup with Jake Paul has shed light on the health scare he experienced this year, during which the boxing icon “vomited blood” on a flight.
Tyson is set to face YouTube sensation Paul on November 15. This match was originally scheduled for July but was pushed back after "Iron Mike" experienced an ulcer flare-up in May.
Before the postponed fight takes place, which will be broadcast live on Netflix from AT&T Stadium in Texas, the streaming service has launched a documentary titled Countdown: Paul vs Tyson.
In one scene shot earlier this year, Tyson talks about the event that delayed the contentious match.
"About a week and a half ago, I was in the middle of my training and everything was going really well. Then, out of nowhere, I began to feel really fatigued," the 58-year-old explained. "I told my trainer, 'I just can't figure out what's happening to me.'"
When I flew in from Miami, I went to the restroom and ended up throwing up blood. Before I knew it, I was lying on the floor. I was also experiencing severe intestinal issues.
"I arrived here, and they discovered that I had a large ulcer measuring two-and-a-half inches, and it was bleeding. My friends were reaching out to me as if I were on the verge of death."
I asked the doctor if I was going to die, and she didn’t give me a clear ‘no’. Instead, she mentioned, ‘We have options,’ which really made me uneasy. I'm just looking forward to leaving this place, seriously.
"I feel so determined to fight and begin my training. I refuse to just pass away in a hospital room; I want to go out fighting in the ring. You wouldn't believe the pain I dealt with from my ulcer. I dropped 26 pounds—can you even picture that? I was really frustrated because I had reached my peak in training."
Tyson hasn't participated in a professional match since 2005, but he did take part in an exhibition fight in 2020, where he ended in a draw with Roy Jones Jr. His upcoming match against Paul will be a formally recognized professional fight, planned to consist of eight rounds, each lasting two minutes, and knockouts will be permitted.
At 27 years old, Paul has built an impressive professional boxing record of 10 wins and just 1 loss, with 7 of those victories coming by way of knockout. He has faced off against many former UFC fighters as well as some less recognized boxers. In his latest match, he scored a knockout against Mike Perry, who is known for both bare-knuckle fighting and his time in the UFC, back in July when Tyson was not able to participate.
