Disruptive snow possible next week

Met Office Weather forecast snow UK

At 12:16 (UTC) on Thursday, January 11th, 2024...

There might be significant snowfall in certain areas next week, due to the impact of an arctic airmass on the weather in the UK.

Starting on Sunday and continuing into the early days of next week, chilly arctic air will be carried over to the UK as a result of winds blowing from the north. This influx of cold air will lead to occurrences of snowy weather centered in the northern regions of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

In the coming week, the United Kingdom will face freezing temperatures. Due to the arrival of warmer Atlantic air from the southwest, certain areas may experience severe snowstorms. However, since there is still a week remaining before this shift takes place, further specifics need to be determined.

David Hayter, who holds the position of Deputy Head of Meteorology at the Met Office, has stated that there is a strong possibility of snowfall in coastal regions of Northern UK. These regions include North Sea as well as the Irish Sea coasts. Furthermore, he added that there is a significant chance that this snowfall could cause significant disruption during the course of the following week.

We are monitoring the collision of warmer air from the southwest and colder air that will be present in the UK during this snowstorm. The area where these two air masses meet is where we may see significant snow accumulation in certain locations. Currently, there are multiple possibilities for when and how this will occur based on our models and we will provide further updates in the upcoming days.

As the weekend approaches, there will be mostly chilly and arid weather across a large part of the United Kingdom, causing many areas to experience freezing temperatures during the night.

In the UK, there's currently a Cold-Health Alert issued by the Health Security Agency. This alert brings attention to the likelihood of having major consequences on the health and social care industry.

According to Dr. Agostinho Sousa, who leads the department that deals with extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, the temperature over the weekend can cause grave health issues, especially for those over the age of 65 and those already suffering from health problems. This can increase the risk of cardiac arrest, strokes, and respiratory infections. So, it is imperative that we keep an eye on our friends, neighbors, and family to ensure they are ready to face the cold weather ahead and take necessary precautions.

As the temperature drops and there is a possibility of snow and ice starting from Sunday, it can affect travel arrangements.

According to Simon Williams, a representative of RAC Breakdown, it's important for drivers to be ready for colder weather as there is a higher chance of snow and ice in the coming week. He suggests that people carry must-have items in their car, regardless of the length of their trip, as these items can be life-saving during freezing weather and breakdowns. Some necessary items include a durable coat that keeps you warm and dry, tough shoes, gloves, a blanket, and a power bank to keep your phone charged.

Although no driver plans to have a car malfunction or get stranded in extremely cold and maybe snowy circumstances, there are many situations where they have underestimated the severity of the weather and ended up in a hazardous situation. It is much more sensible to be ready for the worst and hope everything goes smoothly.
