Storm Henk named by Met Office
At 9:01 AM (Coordinated Universal Time) on Tuesday, January 2nd, 2024, the following blog update was posted:
The upcoming Storm Henk could cause some serious trouble in certain areas of the UK due to its powerful wind gusts, which could result in travel and infrastructure problems.
A region of weak pressure moving across the southern parts of the United Kingdom, referred to as Storm Henk, is expected to cause very powerful winds on Tuesday. The most severe gusts will first be felt in the southwest of England and south Wales during the later part of the morning and early afternoon. In these areas, gusts of up to 80mph could occur in locations that are not shielded from the coast.
With the low pressure gradually moving towards the northeast, the most powerful wind gusts are also shifting in the same direction across the United Kingdom. As a result, many regions in southern England, the south Midlands, and East Anglia will encounter gusts ranging between 50 to 60mph throughout the afternoon and evening. In a few isolated areas, the internal gusts could even reach an unprecedented level of 60-70mph for a brief period.
The forecasters have issued an Amber severe weather warning for wind in certain regions. The warning will be in effect from 10 am this morning to 8 pm this evening. Additionally, a broader Yellow severe weather warning for wind is in place across southern England and Wales.
England and Wales are expecting more rain throughout the day and a Yellow warning has been issued to cover a big area. The expected rainfall between 5pm on Monday and 9pm on Tuesday may range from 15-30mm in most parts, while some areas could experience as much as 35-50mm.
The north-eastern region of the United Kingdom will also experience high winds, and there will be some snowfall in Shetland towards the end of the day.
The head meteorologist of Met Office, Paul Gundersen, has predicted more rainy and gusty climate for the United Kingdom this week. According to his latest forecast assessment, there is a high chance of fierce wind gusts in southern regions of Wales and England. Therefore, he has given a warning and named this phenomenon as "Storm Henk."
The upcoming Storm Henk is expected to bring intensely forceful winds to the southwestern region of England and Southern Wales. These gusts could potentially reach up to 80mph. As Storm Henk advances northeastwards across the southern part of the United Kingdom, the most robust winds will also shift eastwards. By Tuesday afternoon and evening, the most potent winds will be affecting the south Midlands, Home Counties, and East Anglia.
This week, the weather in the UK is expected to stay unstable with western Atlantic conditions being dominant. However, from the weekend onward, there are indications that high pressure might increase, resulting in more stable weather and cooler temperatures.
