People loved Perry's portrayal of Chandler Bing on the hit TV show Friends.
Medical authorities in Los Angeles have verified that Matthew Perry's sudden passing was accidental and resulted from the "instantaneous impacts of ketamine."
In October, the celebrity was discovered motionless in the swimming pool of his residence in Los Angeles. However, the outcome of the autopsy carried out during that period was uncertain.
His death was attributed to drowning.
He gained popularity for portraying the quick-witted character of Chandler Bing on the television show Friends.
This television series documented the lives of a group of six youthful buddies residing in the bustling metropolis of New York City and was broadcasted between 1994 to 2004. The ultimate episode had an astounding viewership of 52.5 million viewers in the United States alone, consequently earning the title of being the most-watched TV episode of the 2000s.
When Perry was extremely popular, he was struggling with being addicted to alcohol and painkillers. He went to rehab clinics more than once to try and overcome his addiction.
During an interview with BBC Radio 2 in 2016, he confessed that he had no recollection of filming for three years while working on Friends due to substance abuse.
In his memoir, he stated that he has been mostly abstinent from drinking since 2001, with the exception of around 60 or 70 times when he has relapsed.
The medical examiner from LA County stated that the 54-year-old's demise was caused by various factors, including coronary artery disease and the impact of buprenorphine. The latter is a medication commonly prescribed for treating opioid use disorder.
According to senior deputy medical examiner Raffi Djabourian, the cause of death from the post-mortem blood specimens was due to an extreme amount of ketamine in the system. The dangerous consequences of this included an overworked cardiovascular system and respiratory problems leading to depression.
Drowning can happen if a person falls unconscious and sinks into the pool, while coronary artery disease can worsen the negative effects ketamine has on the heart.
On the 28th of October, he was discovered motionless at his residence and emergency medical service personnel confirmed his passing when summoned to the location.
The next day, the medical examiner's office made a revision to their records indicating that his case had been postponed. This typically indicates that the autopsy has been done but additional information is required.
During the weeks after Perry's death, his fellow actors from Friends honored him. Jennifer Anniston, who portrayed Rachel in the show, expressed that bidding farewell to Matty was an overwhelming mix of feelings that she had never felt before.
David Schwimmer expressed his gratitude towards Perry for 10 exceptional years of joy and innovation.
In November, American media reported that he had a private funeral and was buried at a cemetery in LA.
He appeared in several movies like the crime-themed The Whole Nine Yards and its continuation The Whole Ten Yards alongside his buddy Bruce Willis. He featured as the protagonist in the humorously romantic Fools Rush In, co-starring Salma Hayek. Additionally, he played the elder version of Zac Efron's character in 17 Again.
Back in 2016, he penned a dramatic piece titled The End of Longing. According to the Times, the play delved into the characters' quest for love and commitment, and the detrimental effects that result from an unfulfilled desire for these elements in one's life.
