Matthew Perry's mother has shared details about her final exchange with her son prior to his passing.
In a heartfelt conversation with Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of the Today show, Suzanne Morrison joined Perry's family to share her thoughts on her bond with her son. This poignant discussion took place before Perry's tragic passing last year due to an accidental ketamine overdose. The complete interview is scheduled to be broadcasted on October 28, 2024, marking one year since the Friends star’s death.
As she sat next to her husband, Perry's stepfather Keith Morrison, Suzanne remembered a touching discussion she had with her son.
"He approached me and expressed, 'I love you deeply, and I'm so glad we're together right now,'” she recounted. “It felt like he had a sense of something coming. I didn't consider it in the moment, but later I reflected on how long it had been since we had talked like that—it's been years."
"I believe there was a certain inevitability about what was going to happen to him next, and he sensed it deeply," she went on. "However, he mentioned, ‘I’m not scared anymore.’ That really concerned me."
Guthrie mentioned that the interview on Today will be the first occasion since Perry's passing when his family and friends will openly discuss his death.
"There is a lot of suffering and sadness, but [they] also possess a genuine sense of meaning in the efforts he was making to assist others in overcoming addiction," the news anchor remarked. "It was the driving force of his life, so there will be some news regarding that as well."
The death of the 54-year-old actor was first described as a drowning when he was discovered unconscious in his hot tub at his home in Los Angeles. However, the Los Angeles Medical Examiner's Office later concluded that the cause of death was related to the immediate effects of ketamine.
Authorities in Los Angeles conducted a seven-month investigation, revealing that the actor had been receiving ketamine treatment for his depression and anxiety. Prosecutors indicated that he had been using the drug without supervision and described his addiction as "out of control," according to NBC News.
Court documents suggest that Dr. Salvador Plasencia is accused of providing Perry with ketamine, while Perry’s assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, is said to have given the lethal injection on the day Perry passed away.
Dr. Mark Chavez, who runs a ketamine clinic in San Diego, has been accused of being part of a conspiracy to distribute the drug. Additionally, Erik Fleming, a connection of his through a mutual friend, and Jasveen Sangha, often referred to as the "ketamine queen," have also been linked to the suspected drug trafficking operation.
Iwamasa and two other defendants came to a plea deal, while Sangha and Plasencia decided to plead not guilty. Earlier this month, Chavez admitted guilt to conspiracy charges after temporarily being released on bail, which required him to give up his medical license and passport.
