Manchester City’s Matheus Nunes arrested in Madrid after ‘stealing phone’ from fan in toilets
Matheus Nunes from Manchester City was taken into custody in Madrid after allegedly taking a fan's phone while in the restroom.
Matheus Nunes, a Manchester City player and Portuguese national, was allegedly taken into custody by Spanish authorities in early September for allegedly taking a fan's phone in a nightclub.
The event reportedly occurred during the most recent international break, when Matheus Nunes was left out of the Portugal national team led by Roberto Martinez due to his slow performance at the beginning of the current season.
Many anticipate that Nunes will step up and take on a larger role with the first team in the next few weeks and months, as Manchester City seeks to adjust to the prolonged absence of key defensive midfielder Rodri.
Kevin De Bruyne's injury has limited Manchester City's choices in midfield for now, giving Matheus Nunes the chance to shine in the UEFA Champions League match against Slovan Bratislava on Tuesday night.
However, the morning following the impressive 4-0 win in Slovakia has brought to light a report from Spain that has overshadowed the player's outstanding performances, focusing instead on his personal life and an event that occurred last month.
As reported by the Spanish newspaper El Mundo and shared by the Daily Mail, Matheus Nunes from Manchester City was taken into custody on suspicion of stealing a mobile phone at a nightclub in Madrid around 5:30 AM on September 8.
The 26-year-old was reportedly brought to a nearby police station for interrogation following allegations that he stole a phone from a 58-year-old man. The incident occurred after the older man attempted to take a picture of the City midfielder without his consent in the restrooms of the La Riviera nightclub in Madrid.
According to the report, Nunes grabbed the phone out of frustration and wouldn't give it back. Police later verified that he still had the phone on him, leading to his arrest. He was then taken to a National Police station located in the Arganzuela area of Madrid.
After a lawyer got involved, Matheus Nunes was freed, but according to El Mundo, he is likely to be charged and go to trial regarding the incident that took place during the international break in September.
Manchester City and Matheus Nunes will fly back to England from Slovakia on Wednesday afternoon. After that, they'll start getting ready for their Premier League match against Fulham, which is set to take place at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
