Mary Earps wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2023

The team has been successful in recent years, having reached the semi-finals of both the UEFA Women's Championship and the FIFA Women's World Cup. Mary Earps, England's Goalkeeper, Wins Another Award!

The recipient of the prestigious title of BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2023 is Mary Earps.

Earps has won the SPOTY award for the second time in a row for the Lionesses. Her teammate, Beth Mead, won the award last year for her impressive performances at the UEFA EURO 2022 tournament.

Out of the six candidates, the goalkeeper was selected as the winner, outpacing Stuart Broad (a cricket player), Frankie Dettori (a horse racer), Alfie Hewett (a wheelchair tennis player), Katarina Johnson-Thompson (an athlete), and Rory Mcllroy (a golfer).

Earps received the award in recognition of her outstanding performance throughout the year. She played every game in the Lionesses' journey to the World Cup final and won several accolades, including the prestigious Golden Glove and Best Women's Keeper awards at FIFA's The Best ceremony. Additionally, she was honored as England Women's Player of the Year.

The accomplishments of Earps in the last few years are extremely remarkable, particularly if you take into account that she had almost quit playing the sport about three years back.

At the start of 2021, Earps hadn't played for the England team since November 2019 and was close to turning 28 years old. Her Manchester United contract was almost finished, and she was thinking about starting a business venture with her brother.

However, when Sarina Wiegman assumed the position of head coach for England women in September 2021, she selected Earps as her top choice goalkeeper, and she has consistently maintained that decision ever since.

Upon receiving her award, Earps expressed her humility in being included among the exceptional athletes in the list. She also conveyed her delight in listening to the inspiring stories of the other awardees during the event.

In my opinion, sports are an incredible thing as they unite people all around the world. It is truly impressive to listen to all the discussions and stories about your experiences. Therefore, I offer my sincere congratulations to each and every one of you.

I would like to express my gratitude to all those who cast their vote in my favor. Thank you so much for your support! I realize I should have mentioned this earlier in my blog.

I feel extremely grateful and modest. In my opinion, this award represents the best overall recognition for sports achievement. Both Lionesses and Manchester United have had a fantastic couple of years, and receiving this award is simply unbelievable.

The journey I've been on hasn't been a smooth one, and if it wasn't for a group of amazing people supporting me, I wouldn't be in the position I am today. I just want to express my gratitude and say a big thank you to each and every one of them.

I am really happy that I was able to bring some of my dear ones with me today. However, I cannot make direct eye contact with them at the moment as it might be overwhelming for me.

My team has stuck by me during some tough times and the past couple of years have been beyond amazing. I have accomplished more than I ever thought possible and I am extremely thankful for that. Also, I want to give a shoutout to Ian Wilcock and Darren Ward, my goalkeeper coaches who are present tonight.

Once more, I express my sincere gratitude to my colleagues and coaches. If it weren't for everyone's support, I wouldn't have achieved this accomplishment. Since I have nothing more to add, I'll end my speech here to avoid getting kicked off by Gary Lineker - hooray!

The group of experts chosen to judge the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2021 consisted of well-known figures in the sports world such as Ellen White, a former member of the Lioness team who won the Euro 2022 championship. Colin Jackson, an ex-Olympian, was also part of the panel alongside Ellie Simmonds, a Paralympian. Finally, Chris Paterson, a former rugby union player from Scotland, completed the team of judges.

David Coverdale from the Daily Mail, Rob Maul of The Sun, and Charlotte Harpur from The Athletic were part of the group of sports journalists that served on the panel. The group was joined by Katherine Grainger, a former Olympian who is now the Chair of UK Sport.

The BBC was represented by three individuals at the event - Barbara Slater, who holds the position of sport director, Philip Bernie, head of sport content, and Gabby Cook, executive producer of Sports Personality of the Year.
